影と陰の一体曲線 (The Single Curve Made of the Shadow and the Shade)

　1枚目の写真は、1月31日のウォーキングの折に右手の赤い屋根が青空によく映えている様子に見とれて撮ったものである。掲載に当たってはトリミングを施すつもりだったが、左手に、撮影時に気づかなかった太くて黒い曲線が意外にも写っていた。それが面白いので、トリミングをしないまま掲載した。歩道と車道との間の柵には、そのような曲線状の影を作るような太い横桟はない。曲線の左右での柵の影のずれから、歩道・車道間の段差によるものと思われるが、手前では、段差の側面は見えていないはずで、段差の影のみが黒線を形作っているだろう。他方、道路が右へカーブし始める辺りから前方では、側面（それ自身の陰の中にある）も見えているはずである。つまり、黒い曲線は、前方へ行くに従って影が陰を取り込んで一体となったものと思われる。

　2枚目の写真は、1月30日に撮ったもので、これも影が面白い。午後のまだ早い時間だったが、冬の陽は木々の影を長く映して、道に美しい模様を作っている。

On the occasion of walking exercise on January 31, I was fascinated by the red roof shining well under the blue sky and took the upper photo. Trying to crop it for posting here, I found, on its left, a thick, black curve, of which I had been unaware when shooting. The origin of the curve was a little mysterious, so that I am posting the photo without trimming. The fence between the sidewalk and the roadway does not have such a thick horizontal bar that would make such a shadow. From the mismatch of the shadow of the fence at the left and the right of the curve, it seems that the curve was made by the difference of the heights between the sidewalk and the roadway. Portion of the black curve nearer to my camera must be made only of the shadow of the side face, because the side face itself is unseeable from that position. On the other hand, portion of the black curve further than that, where the road turns gradually to the right, should consist of both the side face, in its own shade, and its shadow. Namely, the black curve is considered to be the shadow that captures more of the shade as it goes further.

The lower photo, taken on January 30 in Tsukuno-minami housing complex, also shows intriguing shadows. Though it was still early in the afternoon, the sun of winter was projecting long shadows of trees on the road to make a pretty pattern.

不整合の整合 (Consistency of Being Inconsistent)

　2012年2月14日付けの朝日紙に、同紙のデジタル版を広告するページがあり、そこに「就活」こと就職活動を応援する特集が充実したとして、「就活メーク」を動画で習得できることを紹介している（上掲のイメージ上部）。他方、同日同紙の「天声人語」欄（上掲のイメージ下部）は、漱石の『草枕』から「文明はあらゆる限りの手段をつくして、個性を発達せしめたる後、あらゆる限りの方法によってこの個性を踏み付けようとする」という一節を引いて、就職活動での没個性化を嘆き、「同調圧力に抵抗力のある人は頼もしい」と述べている。

　これらの二つの記事は、一つの新聞の内容としては相矛盾している。しかし、没個性化を応援する動き*と、没個性化を嘆く論とが互いに自由に表現されているのは、社内が没個性化していない証拠と見れば、その状況は天声人語子の主張と合致している。一見不整合なところに整合性がある興味深い例である。

　ちなみに私は、大学院の指導教授が建設に尽力し所長を兼務することになったばかりの研究機関に推薦の形で就職したので、「就活」を必要としなかった（いまほど盛んな「就活」をする時代でもなかったが）。もしも、私が「就活」をしたとすれば、個性を出したほうだろうか、どうだろうか。

*「就活メーク」の記事中には、就活メークの分かっていない学生のメークについて「自分らしさが出ない人も多い」という箇所があり、就活メークのすすめは必ずしも没個性化のすすめとはならないとの見地で書かれているようだ。しかし、上掲のイメージ中、中央のメークがよくて、下のメークがよくないとするのは、没個性化であろう。

The Asahi Shimbun dated 14 February, 2012, carried a page advertising the digital edition of the newspaper. There, it is described that feature articles to help shukatsu (job hunting) have been much developed and that you can learn by a video how to make yourself up for shukatsu (upper part of the above image). On the other hand, the Vox Populi, Vox Dei column of the newspaper of the same day (lower part of the above image) quotes the following passage from Soseki's novel Kusamakura: "Civilization uses all the means to develop individuality and next uses every method to eliminate individuality." Then the writer laments the loss of individuality in job hunting by saying, "Those who are resistant to the pressure on individuality is reliable."

These two articles are inconsistent as the contents of a single newspaper. However, we can regard this as the free appearance of both the intention to help job hunting and the lamenting of the trend of job hunting. Here is the respect of individuality in the company of The Asahi Shimbun and is consistent to the insistence of the writer of Vox Populi, Vox Dei. This is a fascinating example of the case that inconsistency at first glance is, in fact, consistency.

By the way, I did not need shukatsu. This is because I got a job, by recommendation, at the research institute that was just established by the commitment of my teacher at the graduate course, who served concurrently as the director of the institute. (It was not even the period when job hunting as hard as now was necessary.) Would I have showed off individuality, if I had needed shukatsu?

Abstract: I reread Leo Tolstoy's novella The Kreutzer Sonata. It was early days of my becoming a first-grade student of a senior high school that I read this work for the first time, and I did not remember Tolstoy's message presented in the work through Pozdnyshev's talk. I first thought that this forgetting was due to my difficulty at that time to understand the message. However, I finally noticed that it was possibly due to my disagreement to the idea that totally denied sensual love. Anyway, the tragedy told near the end of the novella is extremely impressive, and this can be said to be one of the best literary works about the tragedy caused by jealousy, together with William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice. My memory about the first listening to Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata (Sonata No. 9 in A Major for piano and violin, Op. 47) is also described. (Main text is given in Japanese only.)

　レフ・トルストイの『イワン・イリイチの死』を読んだついでに、高校一年の初め頃に呼んだ記憶のある『クロイツェル・ソナタ』(1899) も読んだ（『新潮世界文学』版 [1] による）。この作品の題名は、作中の一場面にベートーヴェンのヴァイオリンソナタ第9番が出て来ることによる。『岩波文庫解説総目録』[2] には、この短編小説について、次の通りに紹介してある。

嫉妬にかられて妻を殺害した男の告白という凄惨な小説。殺人事件にまで発展した嫉妬心が、夫の心の中でどのように展開していったかをトルストイは克明・非情に描き出している。その間、恋愛・結婚・生殖など、すべて性問題に関する社会の堕落を痛烈に批判し、最後に絶対的童貞の理想を高唱する。

　この作品は「わたし」が汽車で乗り合わせた紳士ポズドヌイシェフが車中で語る形で展開している。そして、上記解説中の「恋愛・結婚・生殖など…高唱する」のも、ポズドヌイシェフの言葉として述べられているが、解説 [3] には、「説教家トルストイの意見が生のまま披瀝されている感がある」とある。実際、1890年に発行された『クロイツェル・ソナタへのエピローグ』中には、トルストイが『クロイツェル・ソナタ』で意図しているメッセージを明かして、「肉体的愛は人類の価値ある目標の追求の妨げになる」旨を述べている [4]。

　同じ文献 [4] には、1908年、トルストイの生誕80年にあたっての国際的祝祭の折に、イギリスの作家ギルバート・ケイス・チェスタートンがトルストイのこの考えは「人間であることを嫌うもの」と批判したことが述べられている。私も『クロイツェル・ソナタ』でトルストイが意図したメッセージは行き過ぎていて、同意出来ないので、読後にはそういう「理想」が述べられていたことなど、記憶に残らなかったほどである。再読を始めたときには、ポズドヌイシェフの語る「恋愛・結婚・生殖など」の論が初読において記憶に残らなかったのは、それらがまだ理解出来ない年齢だったからかと思ったが、必ずしもそうではないであろう。そうした論が説得性を欠いている反面、終盤での劇的場面の告白からきわめて激しい印象を受けたことが原因だろう。

　「嫉妬にかられて妻を殺害」するというテーマはウィリアム・シェイクスピアの『オセロ』でも扱われているが、これは奸悪なイアーゴウという人物の企みによって生じた嫉妬がもとになっている。他方、『クロイツェル・ソナタ』での嫉妬は、ヴァイオリンの上手な友人トルハチェフスキーと妻の親密さを見て、自らの心情に発したものであり、ポズドヌイシェフが裁判で無罪になったといっている点に疑問が湧かなくもない。文献 [3] によれば、俳優アンドレーエフ・ブルラークがかつて汽車の中で見知らぬ客から妻に裏切られた夫の苦しみについての告白を聞いたと、トルストイに話したことが執筆の動機になったということである。ともあれ、『オセロ』と『クロイツェル・ソナタ』は嫉妬に基づく悲劇を描いた文学の双璧であろう。

　この作品の中で実に効果的に使われているベートーヴェンのヴァイオリンソナタ第9番を私が最初に聞いたのは、学生時代に同じ下宿にいた二、三歳年長の N さん（いまは亡き彼もヴァイオリンが好きだったようだ）にレコードで聞かせて貰ったときである。彼は楽譜を広げて、「いまは、ここ、…ここ…、…ここ…」と親切に譜面を指差しながら聞かせてくれた。私は楽譜は読めないのだが、音の相対的な流れを目で同時に追いながらの鑑賞も面白いものだと思った。その感激とともに、トルストイの『クロイツェル・ソナタ』も想起していたに違いない。この小説の初読の記憶では、悲劇の直前の場面でこの曲が演奏されていたことになっていた。しかし、それは年月を経るうちに私の頭の中で改作されたものであった。

Abstract: A comparison is made between the Japanese film Ikiru (To Live) (1952) directed by Akira Kurosawa and Leo Tolstoy's novel The Death of Ivan Ilyich (1886). The conclusion is as follows: Getting a hint from The Death of Ivan Ilyich, the theme of which was the fear of death, Ikiru was made an entirely different work, the main theme of which is how to live a short, remaining life meaningfully. 　先日 TV で見た1952年の黒澤明監督による映画『生きる』について、「脚本はレフ・トルストイの『イワン・イリイチの死』が下敷きにされており、作中にそれを暗示するせりふも盛り込まれている」とあったので、そのトルストイの作品 [1] を読んでみた。まず、それぞれのごく簡単なあらすじを文献から引用しておくことが、両者の比較についての私見の客観的裏付けになるであろう。

　生きる：市役所の市民課長、渡辺は、自分が余命いくばくもないことを知りがく然とする。自暴自棄になった彼だったが、希望に燃える若い女性事務員の姿に、自分も生きがいを見つけようと模索。悪疫の源となっていた地区に清潔で新しい児童公園を作ろうと全力で奔走する [2]。

　イワン・イリイチの死：一官吏が不治の病にかかって肉体的にも精神的にも恐ろしい苦痛をなめ、死の恐怖と孤独にさいなまれながら諦観に達するまでを描く [3]。

　これらのあらすじでいえば、『生きる』の「自暴自棄になった」までは、『イワン…』の「死の恐怖と孤独にさいなまれ」までに、よく対応している。そして、強いていえば、『生きる』の後半、「希望に燃える…全力で奔走する」は、『イワン…』の「諦観に達する」に対応している。

　しかし、『生きる』の主題はその題名が示しているように、主人公が短い余命をどのような生きがいを見つけて生きたかを描いた後半にあるのに対し、『イワン…』の主題は「死の恐怖」にあると思われる。『イワン…』の主人公が「諦観に達する」といっても、それは死の一、二時間前のことで、作品の長さにすれば95%以上終わったところにおいてである。つまり、両作品の主題は、それぞれ生と死という対極を扱っているといえるであろう。したがって、『生きる』の脚本が『イワン…』を下敷きにしているといっても、それは、『安城家の舞踏会』が『桜の園』を下敷きにしている（[4] 参照）のとは大いに異なり、むしろ「『生きる』は『イワン…』にヒントを得ながら、趣きの全く異なる作品に仕上げたもの」というべきかと思う。

　なお、[5] によれば、『イワン…』はチャイコフスキー、モーパッサン、ロマン・ロランらが激賞した作品だとのことである。

　余談ながら、『イワン…』を読みながら、私は自分が高校2年のときに書いた拙い創作「夏空に輝く星」[6] を思い出した。「夏空…」において主人公の悩みを記した文章が、『イワン…』においての主人公の苦しみの記述に、それとなく似ているように思われたのである。自分の文を文豪のものと比較することは大それてはいるが、当時私はトルストイと漱石の相当な愛読者だったので、私の書くものが彼らの作品から影響を受けていたことは、十分にあり得ることなのだ。

　このところテレビの NHK BS プレミアムで古い邦画を見るのに忙しい。さる2月6日には1952年の黒澤明監督 (1910–1998) による『生きる』を、2月7日には同じく1952年の成瀬巳喜男監督 (1905–1969) による『おかあさん』を見た。

　『生きる』は私の母が封切りのときに見て、主演の志村喬 (1905–1982) がブランコをこぎながら「ゴンドラの唄」[1] を歌う場面を聞かせてくれたことを記憶している。母が50歳、私が高校2年生のときのことになる。ブランコの場面以外にも、あら筋を聞いたのかもしれないが、全く覚えていなかった。母の死去の年齢を過ぎて、いまこの映画の全貌を知った次第である。『ウィキペディア』の説明 [2] に、「脚本はレフ・トルストイの『イワン・イリイチの死』が下敷きにされており、作中にそれを暗示するせりふも盛り込まれている」とあり、『イワン・イリイチの死』を読み始めている。

　『おかあさん』の主演は田中絹代 (1909–1977)。その長女役を演じた香川京子（1931–）が可愛らしい。折しも朝日紙夕刊に香川へのインタビュー記事が連載中である。2月7日の2回目の記事に、同じ成瀬巳喜男監督のもとで一つ前の『銀座化粧』で田中絹代の妹分役として出演した手応えについて尋ねられた香川は、「成瀬監督は、静かな方でしたけど、ご覧になる目が厳しかった」と語り、田中絹代については、「田中さんは、次の『おかあさん』などでもご一緒しましたが、役に向き合う姿勢がすばらしく、近づきたいと思いました」と述べている。

On Monday and Tuesday this week, I watched on TV the Japanese films To Live by Akira Kurosawa and Mother by Mikio Naruse, both released in 1952. As for the former film, I remember this: My mother saw it when it was released and told me about the scene of the leading actor Takashi Shimura singing "The song of the gondola" on a swing. I have understood all the story of the film at last. As for the leading actress Kinuyo Tanaka in the latter film, I happened to read Kyoko Kagawa's words about her, which appeared in the interview article in The Asahi Shimbun issued just on Tuesday. Kagawa played the role of the beautiful first daughter in Mother and is reported to have said that she wanted to act like Tanaka whose attitude of getting into the character of the play had been marvellous. 『安城家の舞踏会』と『桜の園』の比較 (Comparison between A Ball at the Anjō House and The Cherry Orchard)

Abstract: The other day, I watched the 1947 Japanese movie Anjō-ke no Butōkai (A Ball at the Anjō House) on TV. Then I learned that the film was based on Anton Chekhov's play The Cherry Orchard. So, I have read the play in a Japanese translation again and made a comparison between the film and the play. Atsuko in Anjō-keno Butōkai seems to hold a more significant role to strive for the new life in the future than Anya, who plays a similar role together with Trofimov in The Cherry Orchard. Some other noticeable differences are also described. (Main text is given in Japanese only.)

　先日テレビで見た1947年の日本映画映画『安城家の舞踏会』がアントン・チェーホフの戯曲『桜の園』を下地とした作品と知り、学生時代に読んだ『桜の園（四幕のコメディ）』[1] を再読した。『桜の園』は没落した地主一家が過去の栄華に執着しながら、数かずの思い出を秘めた所有地「桜の園」を手放す様子を描いている。そして、これは当時の社会的変動（農奴解放）を一荘園の生活に縮写した戯曲とされている [2]。他方、『安城家の舞踏会』は、太平洋戦争終結直後の変革の中で没落する名門華族・安城家の人々を描いている。安城家は、これまで通りの生活をするために全てのものを手放し、いまや抵当に入れた家屋敷まで手放す時が来て、過去の暮らしが夢のように消えて行く最後を記念するために舞踏会を催すが、その裏に家族最後のいろいろなあがきがあった [3]。

　『桜の園』の主な登場人物は次の通り。「その」はいずれも「女地主の」を意味する。（[1]、[4] による。カッコ内は筆者の付記。）

ラネーフスカヤ：女地主。
アーニャ　　　：その娘、17歳。（トロフィーモフを愛している。）
ワーリャ　　　：その養女、24歳。（ロパーヒンに気がある。）
ガーエフ　　　：その兄

ロパーヒン　　：商人。（競売で「桜の園」を買うことになる。）
トロフィーモフ：大学生。
ピーシチク　　：近郊の地主。
シャルロッタ　：アーニャの家庭教師。
エピホードフ　：事務員。
ドゥニャーシャ：小間使い。（エピホードフにプロポーズされていたが、ヤーシャに惚れてしまう。）
フィールス　　：老僕、87歳。
ヤーシャ　　　：ラネーフスカヤの若い従僕。（女地主とともに、パリから帰る。）

　『安城家の舞踏会』の登場人物を、『桜の園』にほぼ対応する順序に並べてみると、次の通りとなる（主な登場人物の数は同じであるが、『安城家の舞踏会』は家族の数を多くしてあるので、完全な対応は取れない）。登場人物名直後のカッコ内は演じた俳優。「その」はいずれも「安城家当主の」を意味する。（人物の説明は [5] により、カッコ内のみ筆者が付記した。）

安城　忠彦（滝沢　修）：安城家当主。華族の生活を捨てられない。
安城　敦子（原　節子）：その次女。家の没落に現実的に対応しようとする。
安城　昭子（逢初夢子）：その長女。出戻り。気位が高い。
安城　正彦（森　雅之）：その長男。放蕩息子。
春小路正子（岡村文子）：その姉。
由利　武彦（日守新一）：その弟。忠彦に代わり借金の件で新川と交渉している。

新川龍三郎（清水将夫）：闇会社の社長。借金の形に安城家の屋敷を手に入れようとしている。
新川　曜子（津島恵子）：新川の娘。正彦の許嫁。
遠山　庫吉（神田　隆）：運送会社社長。安城家の元運転手。昭子を愛している。（最終的に屋敷を手に入れる。）
千代　　（村田知英子）：忠彦の恋人。芸者。忠彦の妻となる。
菊　　　　（空あけみ）：安城家小間使。正彦と恋仲。
吉田　　　（殿山泰司）：安城家家令。忠彦の幼い頃から屋敷で働いている。

　『桜の園』の若い娘アーニャは、恋人トロフィーモフとともに、新しい生活を積極的に求める役を果たしているが、『安城家の舞踏会』の敦子は、一人でその役を背負っており、存在感がはるかに強いように思われる。また、『桜の園』よりも『安城家の舞踏会』の方が、緊迫感という面での劇的要素を多く含んでいるようである。そのことは、例えば、どちらにもピストルが登場しながら、『桜の園』では第2幕でエピホードフが言葉に出すだけであるのに対し、『安城家の舞踏会』ではそれが危機的な場面を2度も作り出していることや、後者には正彦が曜子を手込めにしそうな場面があること、いったんは新川龍三郎の手に渡った屋敷が、さらに遠山の手に渡ることなどに見られる。

　他方、『桜の園』は作者自身が「四幕のコメディ」という副題をつけている通り、喜劇的要素を含んでいる。「ボードビル的な、あるいは衝撃的な登場人物…中略…。彼らをその上に乗せて展開する舞台の底流に、滅びゆく古い生活への哀愁がただよっていなかったならば、この戯曲は作者が呼んだとおり愉快な喜劇の舞台を繰りひろげたことだろう」との批評がある [6]。また、社会問題にふれる長広舌の見事さにおいては、『桜の園』が勝っているように思われる。たとえば、第2幕でトロフィーモフがインテリゲンチャの怠惰と労働者の条件の劣悪さについて語ったり、終末を迎えた農奴制を批判したりするくだりにそれが見られる。——ただ、戯曲の活字と映画の印象から両者の正確な比較をすることは、いわば土俵が異なっていて、はなはだ困難である。

映画『めし』(The film Repast)

　一昨日もまた、NHK BS プレミアムで原節子が出演する映画を見た。1951年公開の成瀬巳喜男監督による『めし』である。原作は同年に『朝日新聞』に連載された林芙美子の長編小説。大恋愛の末に結ばれた岡本初之輔（上原謙が演じている）と三千代の夫婦が、結婚から五年を経て倦怠期に入っているという物語である。原節子は三千代の役を好演しているが、私はこの役は彼女に相応しくない感じがした。特に結末が保守的で気に入らないし、そのあたりの場面も彼女に似つかわしくない。しかし、原が演じたことで、この作品は明るいものになったと言えよう。

　上記の感想は私が原節子をひいきするあまりのものかと思ったが、『ウィキペディア』[1] の説明には、原作は連載中に林が急逝して、未完の絶筆となり、映画化にあたり成瀬らによって独自の結末が付与されたとある。そして、映画独自の結末には林文学のファンなどからは批判を受けることもあり、「この夫婦は別れるべきだった」という意見がある*、と記されている。林の文学をよく知らない私も、林のファンと同じ感想を持ったのである。——もう一つ感じるのは、大抵の感想は、インターネット上に同様のものが見つかる時代になったということである。

The day before yesterday, I saw, on TV (the NHK BS premium channel), another film in which Setsuko Hara played. This 1951 film, directed by Mikio Naruse and entitled Meshi (Repast), is an adaptation from the novel of the same title written by Fumiko Hayashi and carried in a series in The Asahi Shimbun. The story is about the couple, Hatsunosuke Okamoto (played by Ken Uehara) and Michiyo, who became weary of their marriage after five years from the fulfilment of their passionate love. Setsuko Hara plays the role of Michiyo quite well, but I think the role is not suitable for her. Particularly, I do not like the end of a conservative approach and think that last scenes are unsuited to Hara. However, this film became a pleasant one because of Hara's performance.

I thought that the above impressions might be peculiar ones caused by my fondness for Hara. However, the Wikipedia page [1] of this film tells us the followings: the author Hayashi suddenly died without completing the novel "Meshi." So, in making the film, Naruse and his coworkers made the final scenes according to their own idea. Thus, fans of Hayashi's novels sometimes criticize the ending of the film by saying,* "The couple should have been divorced." This shows that I, who am not well acquainted with Hayashi's novels, had the same view as that of Hayashi fans. — Another thing I think is this: It is such an age that one often finds an opinion similar to one's own on the Internet.

* In Ref. 1, another quote is given as follows: "Hayashi herself had such a plot in her mind." However, it is not clear which "such a plot" means, the couple's divorce or the ending employed in the film. Thereafter it is written that Hayasi's own plot for the ending is unknown. 　昨日、NHK BS プレミアムで1947年の吉村公三郎監督による映画『安城家の舞踏会』を見た。太平洋戦争で日本の敗戦によって名門華族一家が見舞われた悲劇を描いた作品である。出演者は、原節子、滝沢修、森雅之ら。安城家の次女敦子は、没落の中にあって父を支え、現実的な対応のために一家の采配を振るう。その役を喜びや悲しみの表情も豊かに演じる原節子の存在感が圧倒的である。

　場面の展開にはどこか外国の演劇を思わせるものがある。敗戦後わずか二年目に、このような優れた映画作品が生まれていたとは、いままで知らなかった。インターネットで調べると、「アントン・チェーホフの戯曲『桜の園』を下地とした作品」[1] ということや『キネマ旬報』1947年邦画ベスト・ワン作品* [2] ということが分かった。これらのことは、上記の私の感想をしっかり裏付けるものである。

　私は湯浅芳子訳の『桜の園』[3] を持っている。読んだのは大学生時代のことで、ストーリーをすっかり忘れてしまっているので、再読を始めた。私の若い頃、母は「外国の小説は登場人物の名前が覚え難くて、読みづらい」といっていた。当時の私は、そんなことがあるものかと思っていたが、いま『桜の園』を読み始めてみると、巻頭の登場人物一覧のページをしょっちゅう見る必要を感じる。

Yesterday, I saw the 1947 film Anjō-ke no Butōkai (A Ball at the Anjō House) directed by Kōzaburō Yoshimura on TV (the NHK BS premium channel). This film depicts a noble family's misfortune caused by the defeat of Japan in World War II. Performers are Setsuko Hara, Osamu Takizawa, Masayuki Mori, et al. Supporting her father, the second daughter Atsuko Anjō leads the family for practical response to the situation. Setsuko Hara impressively plays the role of Atsuko with her rich facial expressions of joy and sadness.

The scene of the film progresses like something reminiscent of a foreign theater. I have learned for the first time that such a brilliant film was made only two years after Japan's defeat. On the Internet, I have found the statements that the film was made on the basis of Anton Chekhov's play The Cherry Orchard [1] and that it was the top of the best domestic films in 1947 chosen by Kinema Jumpō [2]. These facts strongly support my view written above.

I have a copy of the Japanese version of The Cherry Orchard translated by Yoshiko Yuasa [3]. I read it in my student days and have totally forgotten its plot. So, I have begun to read it again. When I was young, my mother said to me, "It is hard for me to read foreign novels, because I cannot remember the names of characters." At that time, I thought that it was nothing so hard. However, I now find myself quite often looking at the page of dramatis personae at the top of the book The Cherry Orchard.

　先週は午後のウォーキング時間にテレビで映画を見たり、他の用事があったりしたので、昨日は一週間ぶりのウォーキングだった。家を出て少し南下したあと、東へ進み、泉北2号線を横断し、石津川に架かる橋を渡り、また少し南下してから東へ進むと、写真のような団地周辺の道へたどり着く。

　いつもはそこからほど近い鈴の宮公園へ行き、その西口から東端の南側にある正面口へ抜ける。しかし、先日来、公園では整備工事が行なわれていて、通り抜けが出来ない。そこで、最近は公園の北外側を回る道をたどって、北東口から公園へ入り、工事区域外のところを通って正面口へ出る。工事は3月31日までの予定となっている。完成が、サクラの開花に間に合えばよいのだが。

Last week, I was busy watching movies on TV and doing other things, so that I went for a walk yesterday just after a week from the last time. I walk a little to south from my house, then go to east, cross Semboku Route 2 and the bridge over the Ishizu river, and go a little further to east and south again. Then, I get to roads around a housing complex, such as seen in the above photos.

Usually, I go to Suzunomiya Park near there and pass through the park from the west entrance to the main entrance at southeast. However, part of the park is now under reconstruction, and I cannot take this passage. So, I take the way to go around the northern outside of the park, enter the park from the the north-eastern entrance, and go through the part outside the region of reconstruction, to reach the main entrance. Reconstruction work is scheduled to continue until March 31. I wish that completion of the work is finished before blooming of cherry blossoms begins.

　わが家の窓から向かいの家々の屋根に落ちる夕日を撮ろうとしてシャッターを切ったが、肉眼では真っ赤に見えた夕日が、自動露光の写真では露出オーバーになり、夕日の場所は白っぽい空の一部のようになってしまった。右端の電柱、その下の屋根、そして戸袋の赤い照り返しで、日没の頃であることがようやく分かる写真である。雲が少なかったため、とくに美しい夕焼け風景にもなっていないが、けさの好天気を予想させる空だった。

I wanted to take a photo of the sun falling on the roofs of houses across from a window on the second floor of our house. Though the red setting sun was seen with the naked eye, the position of the sun got overexposure in the photo taken by auto-exposure, becoming like part of the whitish area in the sky. Only red reflections on the rightmost power pole, the roof under it and the door guard show that it is a photo of the sunset time. Because of the smallness of the amount of clouds, it was not even a particularly beautiful sunset view, but the sky was telling favorable weather forecast for this morning.

　昨日ときょうの午後、NHK BS プレミアム・チャネルで2010年の TV 映画『ソフィア・ローレン母の愛』前・後編を見た。ソフィア・ローレンといえば、私が40代の頃に事務局メンバーの一人として会議に参加していた「堺の文化をそだてる市民の会」の代表世話人、K 先生を思い出す。ある日の事務局会議で、会主催の美術展の世話人をお願いする人たちを検討していたときのことだった。前年にも手芸関係の出品の取りまとめを世話して貰った女性の名が出たとき、K 先生は「あの人は、いつもソフィア・ローレンのような格好で現れる」と言われた。謹厳な経済学者の K 先生もソフィア・ローレンの映画を楽しまれるのかと思って、嬉しくなった私は、思わず声に出して笑ったのだった。

　『ソフィア・ローレン母の愛』の原題は "La mia è piena di specchi"、英語では "My House Is Full of Mirrors" である。映画全体はソフィア・ローレンが演じる彼女自身の母ロミルダの物語のようであるが、原題は、ソフィア・ローレンの妹マリーアが部屋に鏡を沢山飾ることを好んだところから来ている。インターネットで調べると、1980年にソフィア・ローレンは映画 "Sophia Loren: Her Own Story" で、自分自身と自らの母親の一人二役を演じたということである。しかし、『ソフィア・ローレン母の愛』製作の2009年には、彼女は75歳になり、若い頃の自分自身を演じることは困難で、若い女優マルガレット・マデがソフィア・ローレン役に起用されたそうである。いずれにしても、この映画から、ソフィア・ローレンが父親と一緒に暮らせなかった不幸な幼児期を乗り越えて、大女優の一人になったことを知ることが出来たのはよかった。

In the afternoons of yesterday and today, I watched Part 1 and 2 of the 2010 TV movie "La mia è piena di specchi (My House Is Full of Mirrors)" on the NHK BS premium channel. Speaking of Sophia Loren, I remind myself of the late Prof. K. At a meeting of organizers of "Citizens' Association to Foster the Culture of Sakai," we were talking about the choice of organizers of the art exhibition to be held under the support of our association. When the name of a woman who had taken care of collecting handicraft works in the previous exhibition was mentioned, Prof. K said, "She always comes dressed like Sophia Loren." Finding that Prof. K, a sober scholar of economics, also enjoyed films of Loren, I was much pleased to laugh out loud.

The Japanese title of the TV movie ambiguously means either "Love of Sophia Loren's Mother" or "Love of Mother played by Sophia Loren." On the other hand, the original title comes from the fact that Sophia Loren's sister, Maria, liked to decorate many mirrors in her room. On the Internet, I have learned the followings: Sophia Loren played the two roles of herself and her mother in the 1980 film "Sophia Loren: Her Own Story." In 2009, when the TV movie I saw was manufactured, Loren became 75 years old. So, even young looking Loren was inappropriate to play the role of herself in young days, and the young actress Margareth Madè was chidden to play the role of Sophia Loren. Anyway, I have fortunately learned from this movie that Sophia Loren, who had experienced an unhappy childhood of not living together with her father, was able to become one of the greatest actress.

　【概要 (Abstract in Japanese)】私が以前に共同研究をしたストックホルム大学のペドロ・アンドレオ教授から、さる1月23日、添付ファイルのあるメールが届いた。ファイルはアンドレオへのインタビュー記事を掲載した「ヨーロッパ医用物理学ニュース」の最近号だったが、その中に彼がスウェーデンの放射線物理学者、故ハンス・スヴェンソン教授の思い出を述べたページもあった。私はスヴェンソン教授に二度会ったことがある。話し合ったのは二度とも短い時間だったが、彼の親切さはよく記憶している。アンドレオとの共同研究を勧めてくれたのは彼だったのである。スヴェンソン教授のご冥福を祈る。（本文は上記リンク先の英文のみ。）

木の根っこ３ (Roots of Trees -3-)

　「木の根っこ」写真シリーズを、きょうまで3回にわたって掲載した。それらの写真のうち、初回にあら筋を紹介した A さんの詩に添える1枚として私が選ぶのは、どれだと読者の皆さんはお考えだろうか。

　私は初回の3枚目の写真を選ぶことにした。その写真には、根の広がりはあまりないものの、どっしりとした幹の根元が写っていて、それが詩の「…／更に更にでっかいでっかいでっかい根っこに／がっちりとつながれているのさ／アメリカという——／…」とあるところの、「でっかいでっかいでっかい根っこ」の存在を思わせるからである。

　きょうの3枚目の写真は、幼い頃、アリが巣を作る働きをしているのを見ると、いたずらをしたことを思い出させる。働いているアリの数匹を別の場所へ強制移動すると、私の命令に従ったかのように、そこに新しく巣を作り始めるのが嬉しかったものだ。

I have decided to choose the third photo in the first post of the series. In spite of the lack of a broad spread of roots, that photo shows a thick stem, suggesting the presence of a huge root under the ground such as described in the following lines of that poem: ... / Then it is further connected to the big, big, big root / tightly enough / — to the root of the name US—. / ...

Today's bottom photo reminds me of my mischief to ants that were working to make their nest. I moved some of ants from the group to another place. Then, they began to create a new nest at the new place. It was as if they had followed my direction. So, I was glad to see their work.

　木の根の写真を撮って歩いて、意外に多くの木々が地上に根を這わせていることや、比較的細い木でもかなり遠くまで根を伸ばしていることに気づいた。地下には、地表を上回る多くの根が密かに木の命を支えているのである。まさに、根は「縁の下の力持ち」である。

By walking around to take pictures of roots of trees, I have noticed that relatively large number of trees make crawl some of their roots on the surface of the ground and that even fairly thin threes extends their roots quite far. More roots than seen on the ground are secretly supporting the life of trees. Indeed, the root is what is called en no shita no chikara-mochi (a man who labors unnoticed under the floor) by a Japanese saying.

　木の根っこといえば、一番先に思い出すのは、北原白秋作詞、山田耕筰作曲の童謡「待ちぼうけ」。

次に、金沢市・兼六園の根上がりの松。他にも各地に、根が地上に高く上がっている松があるようだが、私が実物を見たのは兼六園のものだけである*。

　私が管理している「福泉・鳳地域『憲法９条の会』」のブログに、同会世話人の一人 A さんの詩「根っこ」を掲載するに当たって、挿絵代わりになる木の根の写真を撮りたいと考えた。そこで、昨日のウォーキングの際に、木の根の写真を13枚も撮って来たので、その中の9枚を、きょうから3回にわたって掲載する。根の写真など、ふだんはほとんど撮ることがない。しかし、根も注意深く眺めると、なかなか趣きのあるものである。

　A さんの詩の主旨は、「沖縄問題についての政治家たちの失言・暴言は、実は本音中の本音。その根っこは永田町にあり、さらにその根っこはアメリカというでっかい根っこにつながれている。沖縄を救うには、その根っこを断たなきゃ」というものである。さて、どの写真が最もふさわしいだろうか。

Speaking of roots of a tree, I first think of the children's song "Machibōke (Waiting)" (lyric by Hakushu Kitahara, composed by Kosaku Yamada).

The next thing that comes to my mind is ne-agari no matsu (the black pine with roots high up on the ground) in Kenroku Park, Kanazawa. I hear that there are similar pine trees here and there in Japan, but the tree I have really seen is the one in Kenroku Park only.*

I am the administer of the blog "Article 9 Association of the Fukuizumi-Otori Region," and going to post a poem there. The poem was written by Ms. A, one of the organizers of the association, and is entitled "Roots." I want to post a photo of roots of a tree together with the poem. So, during my walking exercise yesterday, I took as many as 13 pictures of roots. Nine among them will be shown at this site three consecutive days from today. I rarely take photographs of the root but now notice that roots are quite fascinating when we look at them carefully.

What Ms. A's poem says is roughly as follows: Politicians’ slip of the tongue and bad language about the Okinawa issue, in fact, reveal their real intention. Its root lies in Nagata-cho, and that root is connected to the big root of the US. To save Okinawa, we have to cut that main root." Then, which photo, do you think, would be most appropriate for this poem?

1. 『源氏物語千年の謎』

　昨日、妻と近くのシネマ・コンプレックスで、鶴橋康夫監督による映画『源氏物語千年の謎』を見た。私がこの映画を見たいと思ったのは、母が買い、そして読み残して逝った『潤一郎新々訳源氏物語』全五巻を、私も二巻の途中で読み止めてあり、その続きを読みたいという気が少しでも起こればと思ってのことである。
　確かに、その気を起こさせられはしたが、それはこの映画の雰囲気的がよかったからではなく、書物からは映画と異なった味わいが多く得られるはずだという思いによる。

　私も数年前、通しで2回、2回目は『潤一郎訳源氏物語』（昭和14年中央公論社）を読みました。戦前でしたので、時代に相応しくない部分は抜かしてありましたが、潤一郎訳が原文に忠実であると思ったからです。源氏物語がなぜ世界的に認められたかということに関心が募り調べたところ、いくつかの名の通った翻訳がある中から、アーサー・ウェイリーの英訳 Tales of Genji にたどりつきました。その後、平川祐弘著『アーサー・ウェイリー「源氏物語」の翻訳者』が発行されました。引用されている英文も読み、天才ウェイリーの偉大さが分かりました。最近ドナルド・キーン氏が「日本文学との決定的な出会いは『源氏物語』でした、……タイムズスクエアの本屋で安価に売られていたアーサー・ウェイリーの訳本を見つけ、何となく手にとったのが、全ての始まりです（当時18歳）」（「なぜ今日本国籍を取得したか」文芸春秋2011年8月号）と述べているのを読み、やはりそうかと、ウェイリーの偉大さを再認識しました。

2. １６歳の少年が私に相対論などを質問：１～５

　「孫への贈り物」という文に

……その後間もなく、私の最年長の孫（当時大学一年生）の誕生日が来た。私はせめてもの贈り物として、近年恒例にしている誕生日祝いの英文メールに、自分の経験をもふまえた助言を書いて送った。…中略…それからしばらくして、ツイッターで知り合った海外の十六歳の少年が、アインシュタインを大いに尊敬していて、相対性理論について学校の先生に質問するのだが、相手にされないというので、どのような質問か私に聞かせて欲しいと書き送った。そして、その少年からの相次ぐよい質問に答え続けている。自分の孫ではないが、孫の世代への贈り物として。

と述べられていて、その問答がこのシリーズになっています。「１．ブラックホールの証拠」：見えないはずのブラックホールの存在がどうして分かるのか？「２．アインシュタインとブラックホール」：アインシュタインはブラックホールの存在を信じていなかったと本で読んだが、それならどうしてブラックホールを予測する一般相対論を発表したのか？「３．空間と時間」：もしも空間がないとしても、時間はあるだろうか？「４．ニュートンとアインシュタイン」：アインシュタインがニュートンの重力理論に代る一般相対性理論を作り上げたのに、なぜ教科書には、いまでもニュートンの重力理論が書かれているのか？「５．光の速度で動く物体の質量」：光速で飛んでいるものの質量はゼロだということだが、質量はどこへ行ってしまうのか？と質問は続きます。それらは、容易に答えられるもの、漠然としたものなど、いろいろです。筆者は興味深い写真を選び、広い知見を交えて丁寧に回答しています。

　一昨日から当地、大阪・堺は雨続きである（1枚目の写真）。2枚目の写真のような夕焼けをしばらく見ない。雨続きは北陸出身の私にとって、いくらか懐かしい天候でもあるが、いまの私にはウォーキングの時間が取れないのが辛い。けさの TV ニュースまでは、来週の天気予報も曇りや雨が多いようだった。しかし、いまインターネットで気象庁の週間天気予報を見ると、月曜日からは晴れ間も出るようだ。

From two days ago, it is rainy in Sakai, Osaka, three consecutive days (the upper photo). These days, we do not see such an evening glow as in the lower photo. I was born in the Hokuriku Region, so that rainy days are a little nostalgic to me. However, such days are now inconvenient for me, because I cannot have time for walking exercise. Until this morning, the weather forecast of TV news told that it would be cloudy or rainy all through next week. However, a Web page of weather forecast by Japan Meteorological Agency now shows that there would be some intervals of clear weather available here after Monday.

歌声喫茶・イン・ウェスティ (Utagoe Coffeehouse in Westy)

　昨日午後、近くの西文化会館（ウェスティ）のセミナールームで行なわれた催し「歌声喫茶 IN ウェスティ」に参加した。一昨年秋に続いて2回目の同じ催しで、約70名の参加者中、2回目の参加者は私を含めて10数名程度と、意外に少数だった。前回同様、参加者の多くは年配の女性たちである。

　司会と歌の指導をした一ノ瀬陽子さんは、辰年生まれというので、48歳かと思ったが、そのあと披露した話で60歳と分かった。元気な女性である。

　開会前に書いて提出した私のリクェスト3曲中の2曲、「早春賦」[1] と「故郷を離るる歌 [2, 3]」（原題 Der letzte Abend [4, 5]）が採用になり、「原爆を許すまじ」[6] は不採用だった。隣の席にいた男性に生年を聞かれて答えると、「若い！」といわれた。彼は私より10歳年下ということだったから、私が楽しく歌っている様子を若わかしいと見てくれた言葉のようだ。

　このところ、ウェスティの行事に行くたびに、雨に見舞われる。昨日も出かけるときから、40何日ぶりという雨が降っていたが、帰りにはかなり激しい降りになっていた。それでも、なお愛唱歌のいくつかを口ずさみながら、楽しい気分で帰宅した。

Yesterday afternoon, I joined the event "Utagoe Coffeehouse in Westy" held at the seminar room of Nishi Culture Hall (Westy), Sakai. The first of the same event was held in October 2010. The number of people who joined the second time was a little over 10, including me, among the total of about 70 participants and was unexpectedly small. As before, many of the participants were older women.

The presenter and song leader, Yoko Ichinose, said that she had been born in the year of the dragon, so that I thought her to be 48 years old. However, she revealed in her later speech that she was 60 years old. Considering from her age, she is quite a lively woman.

I submitted three request songs before the opening of the event. Two songs among them, "Sōshunfu (Song of Early Spring)" [1] and "Kokyō wo Hanaruru Uta [2, 3] (Original title, Der letzte Abend [4, 5])", were adopted for our singing. My request not adopted was "Gembaku wo Yurusumaji (No A Bomb)" [6]. A young man sitting next to me asked my year of birth. After hearing my answer, he said, "Young!" Since he was 10 years younger than me, his word must have meant that I had fun singing with youthful look.

Every day when I go to the event at Westy these years, it rains. When I went out from the house, it was already raining after forty-something days. After the event, it was raining quite severely. In spite of such weather, I came back in a pleasant mood still singing some of my favorite songs.

「進むことができる」の信号色 (Traffic Lights to Indicate "Cross" in Japan)

[Abstract] In Japan, the traffic light to indicate "cross" is called ao-shingō (blue light). However, it is also said to be the green light (especially in English translations). Which is the actual color? A search on the Internet has shown me that the international standard determined by CIE is green, but that lights as bluish as possible within this standard are used in Japan for the protection of persons with color anomaly. Thus, the actual color lies at the green side nearest to the boundary between green and blue. I wonder why the standard of CIE does not take into account of the problem of color anomaly. 　「進むことができる」を示す信号は普通「青信号」と呼ばれているが、本当は緑色だとも聞く（「青信号」の英語は green light であるとも）。実際には何色かがふと気になった。普段は細部まで注意して見ることのない信号灯を注意深く見ると、この辺りでは、旧式の電球使用のもの（カバーが着色してある）と、LED（発光ダイオード）使用の新しいもの（光源に色がある）が混在している。建て替えコスト軽減のため、従来の電球式信号機の電球部分のみを LED に取り替えることができる製品も開発され、光源は LED で、カバー部分は従来の電球式信号機のままのものも存在するという（文献1）。

　写真は上から、電球式歩行者用、電球式車両用、LED 式歩行者用、LED 式車両用の各信号機が「進むことができる」点灯をしているときの例である。電灯式歩行者用のものが、最も緑色がかっている気がするが、おおむね「青」といっても支障のないような色である。

　ウェブカラー（文献2）で近い色を探してみると、HTML での名称 turquoise、16進 R/G/B 表示 40 E0 D0 のものが比較的近いかと思われる（下図）。

この色は、文献2では「青系の色」に含まれている。和名を知りたいと思い、文献3を見たが、これは JIS 慣用色の和名、洋名のどちらにも含まれていない色のようである。

　交通信号について述べたウェブ・ページを調べると、次のことが分かる（文献1、4、5などの記述から、一貫性のある書き方にまとめてみた）。

——信号の色については CIE（Commission International de l'Eclairage、国際照明委員会）で、赤・緑・黄・白・青の５色を使用することとし、交通信号に使われる色は、このうちの赤・緑・黄の３色としている（白や青は交通信号以外の航空信号等に使われている）。日本の法令では、当初「緑信号」と記していたが、第2次大戦後の1947年に、「青信号」に変更した［道路交通法施行令（文献6）第2条（信号の意味等）］。その背景には、日本人が「緑色」を「青色」と表現することが多いという事情もあるという。色覚障害（赤緑色覚異常）に配慮する観点からは、青に近い色がよいとされるが、国際的な取り決めは「緑」である。そこで、わが国では、警察庁が CIE 規格の緑の色度範囲の中で、なるべく青に見えるような色度の使用可能範囲を定めている。——

道理で、青とも緑とも言い難い色なのである。CIE の取り決めは、なぜ色覚障害を配慮していないのだろうか。

　注：私は車の運転免許を取っていないので、運転免許を取る勉強をした人には自明のことを、さも新しく知ったように書いた箇所があるかもしれないが、その点はご容赦いただきたい。

　先に白い種子の写真を撮って掲載したナンキンハゼの木。そのときにあった紅葉した葉はすべて散ったが、近づいて見ると種子はいまも小枝に沢山ついている。2012年1月13日、堺市中区の保育園脇で撮影。

The above photo shows Chinese tallow tree. I posted before a photo of white seeds of this tree. All autumn-colored leaves seen at that time have fallen. However, going closer, we see a lot of white seeds remaining still on twigs. The photo was taken at the side of a nursery in Naka-ku, Sakai, on January 13, 2012.

日部神社 (Kusabe Shrine)

　日部（くさべ）神社は、わが家の最も近くにある神社。所在地の町名は神社名と同じ「くさべ」だが、草部と書く。本殿前の石燈籠に製作日の記録として「正平二十四 [1369] 年卯月八日」と彫られていることから、本殿は南北朝時代から室町時代にかけての建造とみられ、本殿と石灯籠は1917年に重要文化財指定を受けている（文献1）。（写真は2011年12月26日撮影）

The street name of its location is also Kusabe, but the first of two Chinese characters used for the street name is different from that of the name of the shrine. The date of manufacture of the stone lantern in front of the main building of the shrine is carved to be April 8, the 24th year of Shōhei (1369), so that the shrine is considered to have been constructed during the Nanbokuchō and the Muromachi periods. [Abstract] Reading two reviews, I got totally different impressions of Kuniko Iwahashi's book "Hyōden Nogami Yaeko (Biography of Yaeko Nogami)." Comparing descriptions in the two reviews, I discuss which one is more reliable. (Main text is given in English only.)

　先般、野上弥生子に関連する文を書いたが、それに先だって、この作家の評伝（文献 1）に対する2編の書評を読んだ。1編は朝日紙に掲載されたもの（文献 2）で、もう1編は赤旗紙に掲載されたもの（文献 3）である。私は両書評から評伝自体についてかなり異なる印象を受けたので、ここにそれらの比較を述べてみたい。

　先に読んだ朝日紙の書評では、その題名が示す通り、評伝が隠された「裏面」を掘り起こしたという点に的が絞られている。したがって、書評の読者は、たとえ野上の作品を尊んでいた者であったとしても（『迷路』しか読んでいない私も、そういう読者の一人であるが）、これまでの考えを翻さなければならないような気にさせられる。評者は冒頭で、自らの野上に対するイメージが「くるりと変ってしまったのである」と述べていることもあり、その方向での影響が大きい書評になっているといわなければならない。

　他方、その後で読んだ赤旗紙の書評は、評伝が野上の一作品についての手厳しい批評や、人としての弱点についての鋭くまた辛辣な批評を記していることをまず紹介しているが、「しかし」といって、そこから主論に入る。評伝中の『迷路』への賞賛の言葉を紹介し、野上の夫の死後の、哲学者田辺元との恋愛の描写や『秀吉と利休』論について、評伝を高く評価している。その上で、「宮本百合子との友情にも筆が届いているが、…（中略）…2人の文学の対比で、もっと深めてもらいたかった」と、注文をつけてもいる。結びの文は次の通りである。

　はばかりなくその素顔に迫りつつ「現代の女性作家の先駆け」としての存在の大きさを伝える、出色の評伝である。

　私はこれを読んで、これまでの考えを翻す必要はなかったと思わされた。

　朝日紙での評者が、

　野上の夫が謡曲研究者として名高い豊一郎であること、60代後半で哲学者の田辺元と「恋」をしたことにゴシップ的興味をひかれて手に取ったのだが、…（以下略）…

と書いていることを考えあわせると、赤旗紙の評者は揺れのない視点に立っていて、広く深い洞察の見られるその論は、より確かであると思われるが、いかがだろうか。

　タケ（竹、イネ科）。2011年12月31日、ウォーキング途中で撮影。冬には、周辺の落葉樹がみな葉を落としてしまうせいか、竹林がことのほか美しく見える。

Bamboo is a group of perennial evergreens in the true grass family Poaceae. The photo was taken on my way of walking exercise, December 31, 2011. In winter, the bamboo grove looks especially beautiful, perhaps because all deciduous trees we see around us lose their leaves.

初詣で (The First Visit of the Year to Shrines)

　新年を迎えて各地の神社や寺院は、初詣客でにぎわっているようだ。大阪では大晦日から好天に恵まれ、住吉大社には31日夜から元日までに、昨年を5万人上回る約165万人が参拝し、2日も境内はごった返していたという（3日付け毎日新聞）。私は昨日午後ウォーキングに出て、蜂田神社（堺市中区）のそばを通ったが、参拝はしなかった。人混みにもまれなくても、心に決するものがあれば、参拝の意義は達せられる。（写真は「初詣」の旗を掲げる蜂田神社。年末に撮影。）

From New Year's Eve, it was blessed with excellent weather in Osaka. According to a report of the January-3 issue of The Mainichi Shimbun, about 165 million people (more than last year by 50,000) visited Sumiyoshi taisha to worship, from the night of December 31 to New Year's Day, and the shrine was also much crowded on January 2. Yesterday afternoon, I made walking exercise, passing by the Hachita Shrine (Naka-ku, Sakai), but did not worship. We can achieve the same purpose without joining the crowds, if we make some New Year resolution in our mind. 美しい日本語 (Beautiful Japanese Words)

[Abstract] These days, strange expressions are found among vogue words in Japanese, and such are used even in a serous TV show. On the other hand, I have found beautiful Japanese words in Donald Keene's essay carried by the January-1st issue of The Asahi Shimbun. We perceive words as beautiful, not when they are highly rhetorical, but when they convey rich contents simply and accurately with mutual consideration. (The main text is given in Japanese only.)

　最近、「非常に〜である」という意味で「〜すぎる」といったり、「〜という得難い経験が出来る」という意味で「〜してしまえる」といったりすることが流行しているようだ。タレントか誰かがテレビでこのような表現を使い始めると、それがすぐに全国に普及し、誰もが使うようになる。

　昨日午後7時からのNHK・Eテレ「ウィーン・フィルニューイヤーコンサート2012」という真面目な番組の中で、上記のような表現が二つとも使われていたのには唖然とした。特に、「〜すぎる」という表現が、評論家か誰かの紹介のテロップに、「知りすぎている」というように使われていたのには驚く。「過ぎたるは及ばざるがごとし」という言葉があるから、これでは、その人物をけなしている意味にもなりかねない。——これは美しくない日本語の話である。

　　他方、昨日の朝日紙で久しぶりに、たいへん美しい日本語にも出会った。それは「震災わすれないために」と題した文化欄中の「叙事詩となって蘇る」という文で、ニューヨーク生まれのドナルド・キーン氏の筆になるものだから、皮肉である。

　氏は昨年の東北地方太平洋沖地震を契機に、コロンビア大学を退職した後、日本国籍を取得し日本に永住する意思を表明した。その一文は記憶ということをめぐってつづられている。幼少期の記憶、日本の文豪との日々の記憶…。しかし、年を経てからの志賀直哉との会話の内容は、記憶力に自信があった頃のことで、記録を残さなかったが、今となっては忘却のかなたにあるという。私もこのところ、日記やブログが過去の記憶を忘却から大いに救ってくれていることを実感している。

　氏の話題はそこから昨年3月の震災に転じ、復興・蘇りには「諦め、無関心こそが敵であろう」と述べる。「諦め」は被災者自身に関わる言葉であるが、「無関心」は周囲の人びとに関わる言葉であることに注意したい。また、日本文学の中に災害を記録した文学が『方丈記』しかないと思えるほど少ないという発見に触れ、「過去の日本では…中略…悲惨で恐ろしい出来事は文学の題材に相応しくないと考えられたのかも知れない」との見解を示す。

　終盤で文頭にあった「記憶とは不思議なものだ」の言葉が再出し、「思いがけないひと時に、過ぎた日の断面が突然、蘇る」という事態について考察する。それは、経験が「数十年後に別の叙事詩となって戻って来る」ことと表現し、その蘇りが予想外であることを、「人が行動を起こす時、『これがやがては記憶へと変るのだろう』とは思わない」という習性と結びつける。最後に、「多くの人にとって、昨年は辛い記憶の残る1年となった。今年こそは素晴らしい記憶にあふれる年となることを祈っている」と、被災者たちへの温かい言葉を、記憶の語と結べつけて述べている。

　——私はドナルド・キーン氏の文をなぜ美しい日本語と感じたのだろうか。「美しい日本語」とは美辞麗句のことではない。経験、文学、心理などに関わる豊かな内容が、思いやりの気持ちとともに、簡潔で的確な表現で述べられているところに美しさがあるのだろう。

The above haiku poem mentions the following scenery: Even at the side of a sword-smith's workplace, where sparks scatter, there are blue berries of the ever-green plant ryu-no-tama (dragon's beard, known as mondo grass in English), which are pleasing to the eye. Similarly, we should live a spiritually rich life even under harsh social conditions. (Year 2012 is called the year of the dragon in Japan and China. So, I have quoted the above haiku that includes the word "dragon.")

1. 母校を訪れる

　「昨日午後、京大理学部物理学教室を訪れた。私の旧職場の放射線施設を使う共同研究をしている大学院生の担当教授に、実験結果についてのコメントを求められてのことである」とあり、また、現在の物理学教室の建物に入ったのは初めてとのこと。「大放研・先端研50周年記念集会」という記事には「『大放研』は私の最初の職場（大阪府立放射線中央研究所）の、『先端研』はそれが大阪府立大学に統合され変身したあと（先端科学研究所）の、いずれも略称で、先端研も私の退職数年後から機構改革を受けて、名称が大阪府立大学地域連携研究機構・放射線研究センターに変ってしまった」と述べられています。財政の逼迫による基礎研究の存在意義が問われる中、放射線研究センターとして存続しているのは、筆者にこのように、大学院学生の実験についてコメントを求められるような立派な基礎研究が、「大放研」の研究者たちの情熱によってなされていた証だと思います。「構内をまっすぐに南北に貫く道に沿うイチョウ並木の木々は私の学生時代に比べて、ずいぶん背が高くなっており、その下を歩くのは、いかにも心地よかった」とも述べています。

2. 夢の中のように

　この記事には次の通りに記されています。

　ウォーキング中に花の写真を撮ることを始めたのは、数年前のことで、最初は主記事に関係なくブログのページを飾るのが目的だった。しかし、最近は花の写真だけを載せることが多くなってしまった。花熱が高じて、夢の中でも、珍しい花を見つけてその写真を撮ろうとしながら、うまく行かない自分を見たりする。
　先日、八田荘公園に、夢とまがうばかりの、この季節にしては珍しい、大きなピンクの花が咲いているのを見た…中略…。帰宅後、『花おりおり』の9〜12月のページを第1巻から順に見て行き、最後の第5巻でようやく似た花を見つけた。…中略…ダリアの「品種数は三万を超え、花卉では五指に入ろう」とある。

この文章の中に筆者が四季おりおりの花を愛で、自宅の庭で、あるいはウォーキング中に、花の写真を撮り、ブログで紹介する理由と、珍しい花の名を同定する楽しみが集約されているようです。筆者は各花に英文名と科名を記し、時々花にまつわる話題や思い出を付け加えて読み物にまとめ、ブログへの連載に相応しい形式にしています。『花おりおり』は、朝日新聞が、文・湯浅浩史氏、写真・矢野勇氏で2001年5月1日から朝刊1面に、1年間の休止があったものの、5年間にわたり連載された名作です。私も愛読しました。

3. 理論物理学者・歌人・石原純

　『科学ジャーナリズムの先駆者：評伝石原純』という本の批評を読んだ。［そこ］には、次のように書かれている。
　「石原純」という名前は、多くの人にまずなじみがないことだろう。とすると、「科学ジャーナリズムの先駆者」という表題だけでは、やや誤解を招くかもしれない。［…］何より、第一級の理論物理学者であるからだ。20世紀初め、物理学に革命をもたらした相対論や量子論について、日本で最初の論文を発表し議論をリードした。［…］歌人でもあり［…］これだけの科学者の名があまり知られていないとは、不思議ですらある。

筆者は、「私はその名前に大いになじみのあるいまや数少ないかもしれない人の一人である。1936年に出版された『日本少國民文庫』が戦後改版して出され、私はそれを小学校6年から中学1年の頃に愛読した。その第7巻『世界のなぞ』の著者が石原純だった。私は、その本で原子や分子について知り、湯川秀樹のノーベル賞受も影響して、物理学の道へ進むことになった」と述べ、石原の欧文論文を思い出してそれを見、「研究からは身を引き、科学を論じ、伝える側に回った」理由と考えられる恋愛事件については、歌人としての活動と合わせて『ウィキペディア』にやや詳しく記されていることを紹介し、最後に、「書評は『その生涯と主張は、今日の科学と科学者のあり方にも、大きな示唆を与えてくれる』と結ばれている。読んでみたい一冊である」と述べています。同感です。私は朝日新聞のこの批評を見逃していました。

　スイセンは、ヒガンバナ科の属のひとつの名称。中国での呼び名「水仙」を音読みしたもの。「仙人は、天にあるを天仙、地にあるを地仙、水にあるを水仙」という中国の古典に由来し、水辺で咲く姿を仙人にたとえたのであろうとのことである [1]。2011年12月19日、わが家の庭で撮影。

ヒイラギナンテン (Mahonia)

　ヒイラギナンテン（柊南天、メギ科）。常緑で落葉はしないが、冬に赤銅色になる部分があり、紅葉のようになる [1]。各種の色の葉が混じりあっているのを面白く思い、撮影した［英文説明の 1e 引用箇所も合わせて読むと、色の混じり合いが納得出来る］。2011年12月5日、津久野南団地で。

孫への贈り物 (The Gift to the Grandchild)

　「祖母からの贈り物」という随筆 [1] を読んだのは、今年の1月早々のことだった。いま私が書いている文は、そのときから念頭にあったものである。随筆の著者、長谷川三千子さんは哲学者で、野上弥生子の孫、したがって、随筆の題にある祖母とは、この有名な小説家のことである。「贈り物」である弥生子の手紙が、随筆全文のちょうど三分の一のスペースをさいて、文頭に紹介してある。

　その手紙は、長谷川さんが若い頃、文芸評風の文「『細雪』とやまとごころ」を中央公論社の文芸雑誌『海』に投稿するに当たって、「役に立つなら使いなさい」と、祖母が書いて渡したものである。投稿は、この手紙を役立てるまでもなく掲載の運びとなり、祖母の心づくしの文章は三十年以上、孫の机の引出しの奥にしまい込まれていたという。長谷川さんはそれをあらためて読み直し、「これは単なる私信ではなく、祖母の芸術論であり文学論である」と述べている。

　私は長谷川さんの随筆を読んで、自分は孫たちのために何が出来るだろうかと考えないわけに行かなかった。その後間もなく、私の最年長の孫（当時大学一年生）の誕生日が来た。私はせめてもの贈り物として、近年恒例にしている誕生日祝いの英文メールに、自分の経験をもふまえた助言を書いて送った。その助言は、2010年のノーベル化学賞受賞者の一人、鈴木章博士もその少し前の朝日紙に書いていたことだが、大学時代の参考書は日本語訳でなく、原書で読むようにということである。

　それからしばらくして、ツイッターで知り合った海外の十六歳の少年が、アインシュタインを大いに尊敬していて、相対性理論について学校の先生に質問するのだが、相手にされないというので、どのような質問か私に聞かせて欲しいと書き送った。そして、その少年からの相次ぐよい質問に答え続けている。自分の孫ではないが、孫の世代への贈り物として。（彼との問答については、別途、一連の記事にする予定である。）

咲き残っていた花たち (Flowers That Were Still Blooming)

　写真1枚目のコスモスや2、3枚目のキダチチョウセンアサガオ（エンジェルストランペット、エンジェルトランペットとも呼ばれる）の花を、今年はその盛期に撮り損ねていた。秋も終わる11月25日と12月4日のウォーキングの際に、これらの花がまだ咲いているのを見つけて撮影した。

This year, I did not have opportunities to take photos of the flowers of cosmos and angel's trumpet in their best season. Luckily, however, I found those flowers on my way of walking exercise on November 25 and December 4, when autumn was leaving here.

『源氏物語千年の謎』 ["Genji Monogatari: Sennen no Nazo (Tale of Genji: A Thousand Year Enigma)"]

　昨日、妻と近くのシネマ・コンプレックスで、鶴橋康夫監督による映画『源氏物語千年の謎』[1] を見た。私がこの映画を見たいと思ったのは、母が買い、そして読み残して逝った『潤一郎新々訳源氏物語』全五巻を、私も二巻の途中で読み止めてあり、その続きを読みたいという気が少しでも起こればと思ってのことである。

　確かに、その気を起こさせられはしたが、それはこの映画の雰囲気的がよかったからではなく、書物からは映画と異なった味わいが多く得られるはずだという思いによる。

　　インターネットで見られる専門的な批評としては、The Japan Times のものがある [2]。紫式部役の中谷美紀の演技はかなり褒めてあるが、生田斗真の演じた光源氏には血肉が通っていないとある。私も全く同感である。

Yesterday, my wife and I went to the nearby cinema complex to watch the movie "Genji Monogatari: Sennen no Nazo (Tale of Genji: A Thousand Year Enigma)" directed by Yasuo Tsuruhashi [1]. I wanted to see this movie because of the following reason: My mother died leaving the modern Japanese translation (five volumes) of "Tale of Genji" by Jun'ichiro Tanizaki; I also stopped reading it somewhere in volume 2; so, the film might arouse my desire to read the rest of the volumes.

Surely, I got the effect expected to some extent. However, it is not because of the fact that the movie was quite respectable but because of the thought that I should get a flavor and pleasure from the volumes pretty different from those given by the movie.

One of professional reviews we can see on the Internet is that of The Japan Times [2]. The reviewer writes, "[Miki] Nakatani perfectly embodies Murasaki in everything from her sly wiles to her iron will, […]. Meanwhile, [Toma] Ikuta's Genji remains more of a romance novel fantasy figure than a flesh-and-blood man." I fully agree with him.

　最近の国内ニュースは、内閣による武器輸出三原則の見直し、実質的な偵察衛星の打ち上げ、防衛省による次期戦闘機の選定など、戦争中まがいのニュースばかりで、腹立たしい限りである。他方、国際的話題としては、昨12月13日（火）、欧州合同原子核研究所 CERN で現地時間の午後2時から、ヒッグス粒子と呼ばれる素粒子を探している二つの実験チーム Atlas と CMS が、それぞれのこれまでに得た結果をセミナーで発表するということがあった。当地では、ちょうど就寝時間になるので、すでにおおよその発表内容はインターネットで流れてはいたが、私は、けさのメディア・ニュースを楽しみにして、翌朝目覚めてサンタクロースが枕元に置いて行ったプレゼントを期待する子どもさながらの気持ちで、寝床に入った。そして、きょう、インターネットで見つけてツイートしたヒッグス粒子関連のニュースは以下の通り（英文のあとへ続く）。

わが家のイロハモミジ (The Japanese Maple Tree in Our Yard)

　わが家に一本あるイロハモミジの木は、何十年か前に神戸の友人宅で貰い、持ち帰って植えたもの。今年はかなり美しく紅葉して、いま見頃である。2011年12月12日撮影。

The single Japanese maple tree in our yard is a gift from a friend of mine in Kobe. I brought it back from his house and planted it. This year, its leaves have shown quite beautiful autumn colors, and it is the best time to appreciate them now. The photo was taken on December 12, 2011.

　この花の名が分からない。どなたかが教えて下されば幸甚である。2011年11月16日、ウォーキング途中、道路沿いの他家の前で撮影。

　後日の追記：コメント欄で「ヒメブッソウゲ」と教えていただいた。ヒメブッソウゲは、アオイ科ヒメフヨウ属の植物で、花は上を向いてつき、花弁は開かない。

外山啓介クリスマスピアノコンサート (Keisuke Toyama Christmas Piano Concert)

　昨12月3日午後、堺市民会館で開催された「外山啓介クリスマスピアノコンサート」を妻と聞きに行った。外山氏は1984年札幌市生まれで、2004年に第73回日本音楽コンクールピアノ部門第1位になっていて、今後の活躍が最も活躍されるピアニストの一人である。演奏曲目はベートーベンのピアノソナタ第8番「悲愴」、同じくベートーベンのピアノソナタ第23番「熱情」など。アンコール曲は、リストの「愛の夢」第3番。

　音楽を聞く楽しみのひとつは、繰り返しがかもし出すものであるようだ。その繰り返しには次の2種類がある。自分の聞き覚えた曲が演奏されるという、聞き手の経験の繰り返しと、ひとつの曲の中で主題となるメロディーが何度も出て来るという、曲の構成上の繰り返しである。誰かがすでに書いていることかも知れないが…。もしもこの文の読者がそれをご存じならば、同じ考えを繰り返し読む楽しみを味わって貰ったというものだ。

ツメレンゲ (Rock Pine)

　ツメレンゲ（爪蓮華、ベンケイソウ科）、別名ヒロハツメレンゲ、ヒロハイワレンゲ。2011年月14、25日、わが家の庭で撮影。『維管束植物レッドデータブック』（環境省, 2000）に記載されており、絶滅のおそれがあるということだが、わが家ではかなりよく繁殖している。いま、植木鉢や地面から合計7本の花茎が延びている。

Rock pine; botanical name, Orostachys japonicus; family, Crassulaceae. Photos were taken in our yard, November 14 and 25, 2011. This plant is endangered and mentioned in "Red Data Book, Vascular Plant" (Ministry of the Environment of Japan, 2000). However, it is breeding pretty well in our yard. Now, a total of seven flower stalks extends from the ground and flower pots.

ヒイラギ (Holly Osmanthus)

　ヒイラギ（柊・疼木・柊木、モクセイ科）。2011年月15日、ウォーキング途中で撮影。これまで、ヒイラギに似た葉を持ち、春先に黄色い花をつけるヒイラギナンテン（メギ科）にはなじみがあった。しかし、ウォーキング中に、ヒイラギの木やその花にはほとんど気づかなかった。

Holly osmanthus; botanical name, Osmanthus heterophyllus; family, Oleaceae. The photo was taken on my way of walking exercise, November 15, 2011. I have been familiar to mahonia (Berberidaceae family). This plant has leaves similar to those of holly osmanthus and produces yellow flowers in early spring. On the other hand, I have rarely noticed the tree of holly osmanthus and its flowers while walking.

大放研・先端研50周年記念集会 (The Jubilee Memorial Meeting of RCOP–RIAST)

　昨11月27日（日）午後、ホテルグランビア大阪において「大放研・先端研50周年記念集会」が開催され、参加した。「大放研」は私の最初の職場（大阪府立放射線中央研究所）の、「先端研」はそれが大阪府立大学に統合され変身したあと（先端科学研究所）の、いずれも略称で、私が生涯を通じて働いた場所はこの集会名に集約されている。先端研も私の退職数年後から機構改革を受けて、名称が後述のように変ってしまった。したがって、いまや大放研の名だけでなく、先端研の名も正確には「旧」の文字を被せられなければならない。集会は、大放研の開所式から数えて今年が50年目ということで企画された。筑波、東京、金沢など遠方からの参加者もあり、事務系の人たちも含めて94名が出席し、盛大な集まりだった。

　1枚目の写真は、大放研開設初期の思い出を語る初代庶務課長・板倉守一氏。2枚目は、閉会の挨拶をする大阪府立大学地域連携研究機構・放射線研究センター*長・奥田修一教授（立食形式のパーティだったが、この時間には、出席者の多くは高齢のため壁際の椅子に座り込んでしまっているか、会場後部のデザートやコーヒーのテーブル付近に集まるかしていたので、参加者の多い様子が写らなかった）。

　* これが大放研の設備を引き継いだ現在の機関の名称。

In the afternoon of November 27 (Sunday), I attended the Jubilee Memorial Meeting of RCOP–RIAST held at Hotel Granvia Osaka. "RCOP" is the acronym of my first place of work (the Radiation Center of Osaka Prefecture); and "RIAST," that of the same institution after being integrated into Osaka Prefecture University (Research Institute of Advanced Science and Technology). So, the names of my places of employment during all my life are contained in the title of this meeting. A few years after my retirement from RIAST, the name of the institution was changed again as given below, as the result of the reorganization of the university. Therefore, the name RIAST, as well as the name RCOP, should properly be preceded by the word "former." The meeting was held because it is now the 50th year from the year in which the opening ceremony of the RCOP was held. The total number of participants was 94, including many persons who worked in the administration department, so that it was a pretty large gathering. Some participants came from distant places such as Tsukuba, Tokyo and Kanazawa.

The top photo shows Mr. Morikazu Itakura, the first Head, Division of General Affairs, talking about the reminiscence of the early days of the RCOP. The bottom photo shows Professor Shuichi Okuda (Director, Radiation Research Center, Local Collaboration Research Establishment, Osaka Prefecture University*) delivering closing remarks. (The meeting was of buffet-style, and at the time of Okuda's remarks, many of the attendees were either sitting on chairs against the wall because of fatigue coming from their old age or gathering around the tables for dessert and coffee at the back of the venue. Thus, I was unable to make this a photo to show how a large number of attendees there were.)

* "Radiation . . . University" is the current name of the institution that keeps the equipment of the RCOP.

　サルビア・ミクロフィラ・ホットリップス（シソ科）。2011年11月14日、ウォーキング途中で撮影。

　可愛らしい花だと思って写真を撮ったが、名前が分からなくて、"Google Images" の検索を使った。キーワードとして、"flower red white autumn" と入れ、出てきた多くの写真を眺めて行くと、同じ花の写真があり、 Salvia microphylla var. "Hot Lips" だと分かった。

I took the picture of these pretty flowers without knowing the name. So, I made a search on "Google Images" by the use of a set of keywords, "flower, red, white, autumn." Browsing many photos that appeared, I found a similar picture among them and learned the name Salvia microphylla var. "Hot Lips."

　写真1枚目は、工場裏のサクラなどの並木。手前の土手の下には石津川が流れている。2枚目は、鈴の宮公園のハナミズキ。これよりも一ヵ月近く前に撮った同じ木の写真と比べると、赤みがかなり増している。3枚目は、八田荘中学校校庭の秋色。校舎の廊下部分の窓を通して、その先にある校庭の秋色も見えている。いずれも、2011年11月21日撮影。

The top photo shows the line of cherry and other trees at the back of a factory. Below the bank, there flows the Ishizu River. The middle image is a shot of a flowering-dogwood tree in Suzunomiya Park. The red color of this tree has deepened more than that in the photo taken almost a month before. In the bottom photo, we see autumn colors in the yard of Hattaso Junior High School. Through windows of the corridor portion of the building, autumn colors in another yard beyond are also seen. 　カキノキ（柿の木、カキノキ科）。2011年11月12日、ウォーキング途中で撮影。このカキノキの実はいささか小ぶりのようだ。

鈴の宮公園の秋色２ (Autumn Colors in Suzunomiya Park -2-)

　11月12日、堺の鈴の宮公園で。1枚目の写真で紅色をていしているのは、8月末から一部分紅葉しはじめていたイロハモミジ。この公園の他のイロハモミジの木はまだこれほど紅葉していない。2枚目は、一昨日近くで撮った写真を掲載した公園西入口の方を、東から遠望した光景。近くで見るよりも、サクラの紅葉が進んでいるかのように見える。3枚目は公園の池の東にある一本のサクラ。

Photos were taken in Suzunomiya Park, Sakai, on November 12. Leaves of red color in the top photo are of the Japanese maple tree, some leaves of which already began to take autumn colors at the end of August. The other maple trees in this park are much slower to take autumn colors than this one. The middle photo shows the distant view of the area around the west entrance of the park (the day before yesterday, I posted photos taken at that area). Turning into autumn colors of cherry leaves is seen to have much more proceeded in the distant view than in a close look. The bottom photo shows a cherry tree near the east end of the pond of the park.

1. 盛会だった福泉・鳳地域「憲法９条」の会5周年のつどい

　10月30日午後2時から、「東日本大震災と原発事故にむきあって：活かそう憲法９条」を標語として、私が世話人代表を務める福泉・鳳地域「憲法９条」の会5周年のつどいが、堺市立西文化会館で開催された。（中略）参加者一同での歌「島人ぬ宝」「青い空は」［のあと］、朝日新聞社「be」編集部・伊藤千尋氏の一時間半におよぶ講演を聞いた。氏の話は、多くの海外での見聞にもとづいて、（中略）スペイン領カナリア諸島（中略）、南米ベネズエラ（中略）、コスタリカ（中略）、南米エクアドル（中略）など［の各地での］、憲法９条を守る運動の励みになる［話］が一杯だった。

と述べられています。"Japan must show the flag!" アーミテージ国務副長官のこの一言で自民党は浮き足立ち、小泉首相はアメリカに飛んで大統領に目に見える支援を誓い、米軍の後方支援のため自衛隊をイラクに派遣しました。東日本大震災・福島第一原発事故で自衛隊は献身的に活動し、わが国民のみならず、海外からも賞讃されました。スペインからは、「福島の英雄（警視庁、陸上自衛隊などの5名）」としてアストゥリアス皇太子賞（平和部門）を授賞しました。これらの活躍を後押しするとして、自衛隊を国際紛争の解決に動員できるように「憲法9条」を改訂するようなことがあってはなりません。ご活躍を祈ります。

2. なにわのクルーズ・味・歌声

　さる4日、妻と私は JR 西日本ジパング倶楽部による催し「歌声の集い・なにわの味・道頓堀クルーズ」に参加した。一行約200名は2隻の船に分乗し、天満橋の八軒家浜船着場を出発。（中略）間もなく、東横堀川水門を通る。水位差を調節しながら進む水門の通過は、ライン河・マイン河クルーズで経験したが、国内では初めての経験である。（中略）約1時間後、道頓堀の太左衛門橋船着場に到着した。（中略）法善寺横町の「すし半」で食事し、（中略）歌声の集いの会場「道頓堀ZAZA」の前に集合する。（中略）若い女性ソングリーダーの司会・進行とバンドの演奏で、休憩を挟んで3時まで、全18曲を一同が元気に歌った。参加申し込み時に、歌のリクェストを書くことが出来たので、私の愛唱歌を10余りも書き並べておいたところ、最初の「ミカンの花咲く丘」で、「堺市にお住まいの多幡さんのリクェスト」と紹介されて驚いた。5曲目の「夏の思い出」でも、他の方の名とともに私の名がリクェスト者として挙げられた。

とのこと。陽気で楽しい大阪ならではの催しです。筆者がウォーキング中に日本の歌を口ずさみ、愛唱歌のレパートリーを広げ、楽しんでおられるという、知られざる一面が背景にある、興味ある一文です。リクェストされた曲は、母親との思い出や美しい自然を歌う、綺麗なメロディーの、優しさのある歌です。運河の話も初耳でした。

　「ザクロの花と実」では、

花だけが咲いていた頃には、何という名の花だろうと思いながら見ていたが、このところ、実がなって花もまだ残っていたので、名前がわかった。幼い頃、母が両手を組み合わせて、手首の方を私に見せ、「実のあるザクロか？ないザクロか？」といって遊んでくれた。

と述べています。最近の朝日紙「天声人語」欄に、「梅雨時に見る花には不思議と白い花が多い」と書いたら、関西に住む年配者から「万緑叢中紅一点、紅い花もお忘れなく」との便りがあったことが紹介されていた。「万緑叢中紅一点」は「柘榴の詩」と題する漢詩の一節で、いちめんの緑に紅い花が一つ咲く情景をうたっているそうです。そこで天声人語子も、近くの家に植わっているザクロの、夏の花と秋の実について記していました。ザクロの花と実にまつわるこの二つの話は、印象に残りました*。

　「秋の日はつるべ落とし」の一枚目の写真は、低位置の太陽が地面に写す全身の影が、とてもひょろ長くなることを示すため、塀の前に立ち上半身の、実物と縦横比のあまり変わらない影と、地面の下半身のひょろ長い影を撮影したもので、遊び心のあるアイデアだと思いました**。

　「秋空のもと」の一戸建てや二戸続きの住宅の並ぶ団地の中の小路の写真は、向こうに赤や赤紫色の屋根が秋空によく映えていて、配色がよく、絵になりますね。

　『科学ジャーナリズムの先駆者：評伝石原純』[1] という本の批評 [2] を読んだ。その最初には、次のように書かれている。

　「石原純」という名前は、多くの人にまずなじみがないことだろう。とすると、「科学ジャーナリズムの先駆者」という表題だけでは、やや誤解を招くかもしれない。

私はその名前に大いになじみのある、いまや数少ないかもしれない人の一人である。1936年に出版された『日本少國民文庫』が戦後改版して出され、私はそれを小学校6年から中学1年の頃に愛読した。その第7巻『世界のなぞ』（1948年、新潮社）の著者が石原純だった。私は、その本で原子や分子について知り、湯川秀樹のノーベル賞受賞（1949年）も影響して、物理学の道へ進むことになった。

　上に述べた書評は、次のように続く。

　著者が冒頭で記しているように、何より、第一級の理論物理学者であるからだ。20世紀初め、物理学に革命をもたらした相対論や量子論について、日本で最初の論文を発表し議論をリードした。

ここで私は『日本の物理学史下資料編』[3] に石原の欧文論文が一編収録されていたことを思い出し、書棚から取り出して見た。

　石原（1881〜1947）が一般的量子条件をウィルソン（W. Wilson）やゾンマーフェルド（A. Sommerfeld）とは独立に見出した論文。

という紹介があって、ドイツ語の論文 [4] が引用されている。同じ論文は、文献 5 にも同様に紹介されている。文献 3 には、石原が和文で書いた2編 [6, 7] も収録されている。

　次いで書評には、「歌人でもあり」とあり、少し飛んで、次の文がある。

　これだけの科学者の名があまり知られていないとは、不思議ですらある。
　妻子ある身での恋愛がスキャンダルになり、42歳で東北帝大教授を退職したこともあるのだろうか。以来、研究からは身を引き、科学を論じ、伝える側に回った。

石原の恋愛事件については、彼の歌人としての活動と合わせて、『ウィキペディア』[8] にやや詳しく記されている。

　書評は、「その生涯と主張は、今日の科学と科学者のあり方にも、大きな示唆を与えてくれる」と結ばれている。読んでみたい一冊である。

鈴の宮公園の秋色１ (Autumn Colors in Suzunomiya Park -1-)

　11月12日、堺の鈴の宮公園では、サクラの紅葉はまだ進行中だった。1枚目の写真は公園の西入り口にある道を北側から見たもの。少数の黄色ないし橙色になった葉が逆光中で金色に輝く眺めが好きで、毎年同様な写真を撮っている。2枚目は、この公園の中心である池を西から見た風景。四阿（あずまや）の向こう辺りの池の縁では、釣りを楽しんでいる人をときどき見かける。

In Suzunomiya Park, Sakai, on November 12, turning of cherry leaves into autumn colors was still in progress. The top picture shows the view, from the north, of the foot path at the west entrance of the park. I like the scenery in which a small amount of cherry leaves in yellow or orange is shining in gold against the light. So, I take a photo similar to this each year. The bottom picture shows the perspective, from the west, of a pond at the center of the park. In the edge area of the pond a little beyond a shelter, we sometimes see people who enjoy fishing.

夢の中のように (Just Like in the Dream)

　ウォーキング中に花の写真を撮ることを始めたのは、数年前のことで、最初は主記事に関係なくブログのページを飾るのが目的だった。しかし、最近は花の写真だけを載せることが多くなってしまった。花熱が高じて、夢の中でも、珍しい花を見つけてその写真を撮ろうとしながら、うまく行かない自分を見たりする。

　先日、八田荘公園に、夢とまがうばかりの、この季節にしては珍しい、大きなピンクの花が咲いているのを見た（写真；一枚目は最初に見た位置から逆光状態で撮影。二枚目は反対側の高くなっている地面で、近づいて撮影）。帰宅後、『花おりおり』の9〜12月のページを第1巻から順に見て行き、最後の第5巻でようやく似た花を見つけた（9月の章、p. 104）。それは赤い花だったが、形は私の見たものにそっくりで、「ダリア一重」とあった。ダリアの「品種数は三万を超え、花卉では五指に入ろう」とある。

　後日の追記：その後、写真の植物はコダチダリア（木立ちダリア、キク科）と呼ばれるもので、皇帝ダリアの別名を持つと知った。

A few years ago, I began to take pictures of flowers while walking. The original purpose was to increase the impact of blog pages with photos having no relation to the blog article. These days, however, my blog pages have begun to provide such an impression that its main purpose is to post pictures of flowers. My passion for taking pictures of flowers was so heightened that I often dream a dream of myself trying to get a picture of a rare flower without success.

The other day in Hattaso Park, Sakai, I saw such large, pink flowers that were rarely seen in this season (see the above photos; the top one was shot in the backlit situation as I first saw them; and the bottom one is a closer shot on the other side, where the ground was higher than the first position). After returning home, I browsed the pages of flowers from September to December in the books "Hana Oriori (Flowers in Each Season) Volume 1 to 5." In the last volume (Chapter "September," p. 104), I finally found a red flower, whose shape is quite similar to that of flowers in Hattaso Park. Its name was "single-flower dahlia." There was the following description: The number of varieties of dahlia is more than thirty thousand, probably being among the top five of flowers.

Note added later: I learned that the plant in the photo is called tree dahlia (botanical name, Dahlia imperialis; family, Asteraceae).

竹林 (The Bamboo Grove)

　わが家から鈴の宮公園へ行く途中、公園にかなり近づいてから二通りの上り坂のどちらかを選ぶことになる。左の坂を選んで進むと、上掲の写真のような竹林が左手に見える。その全体像をカメラに収めたところ、竹林の姿が楕円に近い形をしていて、映像処理ソフトの "matte" メニューを施したかのような感じの写真になった（2011年11月12日撮影）。

On my way to Suzunomiya Park, I have to choose one of two ways upward at a place fairly close to the park. Selecting the left way, I see on my left a bamboo grove as seen in the above photo. The total view of the grove from the road has an oval shape. Thus, the photo looks as if it were treated by the "matte" menu of an image processing program (the photo was taken on November 12, 2011).

季節外れのオシロイバナ (Four O'clock Flower Blooming Out of Season)

　オシロイバナ（白粉花、オシロイバナ科）。2011年11月10日、ウォーキング途中で撮影。この花は、盛期である夏には夕方に咲いて翌朝にはしぼんでしまい、私のウォーキング時間では、咲いているところを撮影出来ない。しかし、秋には咲いている時間が延びていて、撮影出来た次第である。

Four o'clock flower or marvel of Peru; botanical name, Mirabilis jalapa; family, Nyctaginaceae. Photos were taken on my way of walking exercise, November 10, 2011. Flowers of this plant are at best in summer. In that season, these flowers open in the evening and wither the next morning, so that I was unable to take pictures of them during my walking time. In autumn, however, they are blooming until late morning, and I got the above shots.

リュウゼツランの仲間 (Spanish Dagger)

　アツバキミガヨラン（クサスギカズラ科）。2011年11月10日、ウォーキング途中で撮影。なぜか名前が「君が代」を含む。学校での「君が代」斉唱の強制に反対する私は、日本語表題にこの名を出すことを避けた。

The photo was taken on my way of walking exercise, November 10, 2011. Somehow the Japanese name of this plant atsubakimigayoran includes the word Kimigayo (the title of the Japanese anthem, meaning Emperor's era). I oppose the forcing of singing Kimigayo in school ceremonies. So, I have avoided using this name for the Japanese title of this blog post, writing the words to express "the plant in the same family as agave."

異形かと思えば… (Not An Abnormal Shape)

　先日「まだ咲くわが家のハマユウ」として紹介した花の中に、その後、異形と思われる一輪を見つけた［上掲の写真（2011年11月8日撮影）の左下］。しかし、翌朝見ると、上部に群がっている他の花々と同じ形になってしまっていた。多分、開き始めの形にとどまっている時間が夏期には短いせいで、このような形を経てから、よく見る形になることに今まで気づかなかったのだろう。

Among the flowers I mentioned in the earlier blog post "Still Blooming Crinum asiaticum in Our Yard," I found one in a shape different from normal ones (see the flower at lower left in the above photo, which was taken on November 8, 2011). The next morning, however, I saw it changed into the same shape as the other flowers that were blooming above it. It seems that I saw for the first time the appearance of the flower in the period of just beginning to open. The reason for the fact that this period had escaped my observation until this time is probably that its length is too short to be noticed in summer.

母校を訪れる (Visit to My Alma Mater)

　昨日午後、京大理学部物理学教室を訪れた。私の旧職場の放射線施設を使う共同研究をしている大学院生の担当教授に、実験結果についてのコメントを求められてのことである。思えば、学位取得後も理学部構内へは何度か行ったが、現在の物理学教室の建物に入ったのは初めてである。構内をまっすぐに南北に貫く道に沿うイチョウ並木は、まだ十分には秋色を呈していなかった（写真）。それでも、木々は私の学生時代に比べて、ずいぶん背が高くなっており、その下を歩くのは、いかにも心地よかった。

Yesterday afternoon, I was invited by a professor at Department of Physics, Kyoto University. The purpose was to provide comments on the experiment made by one of his graduate students at the radiation facility of my former work place. I visited the campus of Faculty of Science, Kyoto University, a few times after my getting Dr's degree, but this was the first time to enter the new building of Department of Physics. There is a campus road going straight from the gate to the northern end, and the road is lined with Ginkgo trees (see the above photo). Leaves of the trees were not yet showing full autumn color. However, the trees were much taller than my student days, and I felt it quite pleasant to walk under them.
