(M.Y's Comments on the Posts of March 2011)

 New York Academy of Science (NYAS)

(The Literary Review Referring to Literary Persons' Responsibility for Nuclear Accidents)

Abstract: The Asahi Shimbun dated April 27, 2011, carried a literary review of this month written by Minako Saito. This is an excellent article in that she refers to literary persons' responsibility for the accidents that happened at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant last month and still continue. (The main text is given in Japanese only.)

(What We Wish about Fukushima Nuclear Accidents)

Abstract: I prepared a draft for one of the statements that were planned to be made at the 23rd General Meeting of "Sakai-Shimin Kon" held on April 23. It was about the Fukushima nuclear accidents. I did not attend the meeting, so that I do not know the final form of the statement. Considering that the draft might be of use for those who prepare similar statements, I post the draft here. (The main text is in Japanese only.)

(How to Use the Japanese Word "Kangamiru")

The rather old Japanese word kangamiru to mean "in the light of" should come after the particle ni. These days, however, I have seen the improper use with the particle o in the followings: the statement at the Web site of the Atomic Energy Society of Japan to cancel the spring meeting and the statement of the Construction Bureau, Sakai City, to cancel the Azaleas Walk Through at Asakayama Water Treatment Plant. Now, it is the occasion that many events are canceled in the light of tragic news of Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. So, I wish that the word is used correctly.

(The Anniversary of Albert Einstein's Death)

Einstein1921 by F Schmutzer 2

Albert Einstein during a lecture in Vienna in 1921 (age 42)
[A Wikimedia Commons file].

Der Mensch ist sterblich."

Albert Einstein died on April 18, 1955. At that time, I was the second-year student of a university and wrote in my diary the following bizarre words of praise for his achievements:

Albert Einstein died. This reminds me of the clear and undeniable fact, "Der Mensch ist sterblich." It is doubtful that, even if we were the four-dimensional creature that can look down the passage of time and is unsterblich because of its rising above time, we could develop Einstein's theories more easily than him. Rather, the four-dimensional being might be such a poor thing that lacks the ability of thinking enabled by the three-dimensional structure of brain cells. (Belated Raising of Alert Level to 7)

Yesterday (April 11), amid strong aftershocks in the region of eastern Japan, the government announced the "planned evacuation" for five areas outside the initial 20-km zone of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Today, in addition, they decided to raise the severity level of the nuclear crisis at the power plant to the highest ranking of 7.

The rating of level 7 was already made by a nuclear safety expert of an international environmental protection organization Greenpeace on March 25 [1]. This assessment is based on the analysis of the total amount of radionuclides released until March 23.

This belatedness of the Japanese government's evaluation indicates the slowness of the government's overall response. Rapidity is one of the most critical factors of the treatment of the accident. I am certainly not alone to wonder if they can well protect the safety of the residents by such slowness.

The photos show, from the top to the bottom, somei-yoshino blossoms in Kōzen park, the rows of alternating somei-yoshino and oshima cherry trees in the park (the latter kind shows blossoms and young green leaves at the same time), and Persian speedwells my wife found in the ume grove of the park.

The "Vox Populi, Vox Dei" column of yesterday's Asahi Shimbun just carried the following story about Persian speedwells:

Rigen Kinoshita wrote these tanka poems: "As soon as they sensed the warmth of the soil around their roots / the sky-blue flowers bloomed on the sunny roadside," and "As the late afternoon wind turns chilly / little sky blue flowers on the wayside close up one by one." The sky blue flowers in these poems are Persian speedwells, whose Japanese name is ōinu no fuguri — literally, "big dog's testicles." Some people who took pity on this plant for its terrible name once suggested that it be changed to "hoshi no hitomi" or "starry eye." But botanist Takemasa Osada disagreed, noting in his essay, "Such a name is phony because it seems too pretty, and it doesn't match the plant's endearingly down-to-earth personality." [This story has been adapted from the official English translation, which was entitled, "Spring flowers help us to appreciate life," (April 12, 2011) after its appearance on the asahi.com Web site.]

1 (Kōzen Park in Spring 1)

In the morning, my wife and I visited Kōzen Park in Minami-ku, Sakai. This park is famous for its ume grove, but we can enjoy also cherry blossoms there. The photos show, from the top to the bottom, the row of somei-yoshino trees along the northern side of the park, somei-yoshino blossoms in the park and the blossoms of Japanese cornel.
