ミテチョウダイさん (Ms. Please-Look-at-Me)

　　先に「セイロンベンケイの花の生長」という記事を書いたが、今回は同じセイロンベンケイについて、一つの花の成長過程を追った写真を載せる。普通は細長い円筒状に下向きに生長するガクが、早い段階で大きな割れ目を生じて成長が止まり、中で花弁が生長する様子をみることの出来る花があった。わが家ではこれを「ミテチョウダイさん」と名づけて見守り、写真によって記録もした。上掲のイメージは、それらの写真から6枚を選んで一つにまとめたものである。

　撮影日は上段左から、2月12日、3月4日、3月9日、下段左から、3月12日、3月14日、3月15日である。正常な花では、花弁は、最後の写真で少し反り返っている先端部分だけが、ガクの下部に見える（最後の写真の右下隅に、正常なガクの薄茶色の尻尾のように見えているのが、普通に見える花弁の部分のしおれた状態）。「ミテチョウダイさん」は、花弁をもっと上部まで、特別に見せてくれている。

　直径 1 mm 足らずの、これが花に生長するのだろうかと、不思議に思われた白色の粒状のものが見えてから、1枚目の写真の状態になるまでに1ヵ月以上の日が経っていた。そして、1枚目の写真から、開花状態の6枚目の写真までがさらに1ヵ月あまりである。

　東日本大震災の地での復興は、この花の生長よりも、もっともっと長い期間が必要であろうが、日本中の人びとの協力によって、出来るだけ早く達成したいものである。

I earlier wrote a blog post entitled "Growing Up of Air Plant Flowers." This time, I post a collection of pictures showing the development of a single flower of the same plant, the botanical name of which is Kalanchoe pinnata. The calyx of air plant typically grows downward into an elongated cylindrical body. However, we found the odd flower whose calyx had a large crack and stopped growing at an early stage. Because of the crack, we were able to observe how petals grow inside that calyx. We named that flower "Ms. Please-look-at-me," and kept watching it and taking photos of it. The above image shows a collection of selected photos.

The dates when these photos were taken are, from upper left to right, February 12, March 4 and March 9; and from bottom left to right, March 12, March 14 and March 15. In normal flowers, only the tip portion, with a slight outward curling (see the last photo), of petals can be seen at the bottom of the calyx (at lower right of the last photo, the thing that looks like a light brown tail of a normal calyx is a withered cluster of petals). Ms. Please-look-at-me specially has showed us the whole of her petals.

At first, we saw little and white spheres of less than 1 mm in diameter and wondered if this would grow into flowers. Since then, more than a month had passed until we saw the state shown in the first photo. It again took almost the same duration from the state of the first photo to the state of flowering in the sixth photo.

Reconstruction in the eastern Japan, where the mighty earthquake caused an enormous damage, will require much longer duration than the growth of this flower. However, I wish that it is achieved as soon as possible with the cooperation of all the people of Japan.
