アインシュタインの命日 (The Anniversary of Albert Einstein's Death)

　1955年のきょう、アルバート・アインシュタインが死去した。当時大学2年生だった私は4月20日付けの日記に、下記の奇妙な言葉で彼の功績を讃えている。

アルベルト・アインシュタイン死去。"Der Mensch ist sterblich." という単純で明瞭な事実を表わしている言葉を、改めてしみじみと想起させられる。しかし、われわれが 3次元空間における sterblich な生物ではなく、時間を見下ろすことのできる、また、その時間的超越性のため unsterblich な4次元的生物であったとしても、アインシュタインの考え出した理論をより容易に知ることができたかどうか疑問である。かえって、われわれは4次元的存在であることによって、脳細胞の3次元的組み合わせが作り出している思考作用にはあずからないという不幸な状態の中にいたかも知れない。

Albert Einstein died on April 18, 1955. At that time, I was the second-year student of a university and wrote in my diary the following bizarre words of praise for his achievements:

Albert Einstein died. This reminds me of the clear and undeniable fact, "Der Mensch ist sterblich." It is doubtful that, even if we were the four-dimensional creature that can look down the passage of time and is unsterblich because of its rising above time, we could develop Einstein's theories more easily than him. Rather, the four-dimensional being might be such a poor thing that lacks the ability of thinking enabled by the three-dimensional structure of brain cells.
