映画『天地明察』 (The Film Tenchi: The Samurai Astronomer)

　昨日、近くのシネマコンプレックスで、『おくりびと』（2009 年アカデミー賞外国語映画賞受賞）の滝田洋二郎監督による映画『天地明察』を見た。冲方丁（うぶかた とう、1977–）による同題名の時代小説（2009 年刊行；2010 年本屋大賞受賞）を映画化したものである。主人公・安井算哲（二世）はのちに渋川春海（しぶかわ はるみ、しぶかわ しゅんかい；1639–1715）と名乗った実在の人物で、江戸時代前期の天文暦学者、囲碁棋士、神道家、貞享暦の作成者である。

　代々、将軍に囲碁を教える名家に生まれた安井算哲（岡田准一が演じる）は、対局よりも星と算術に夢中になっていた。ある日、会津藩主の保科正之（松本幸四郎）から日本全国で北極星の高度を測り、各地の位置を割り出す「北極出地」を命じられる。一年半の任務を終え、暦のずれが判明すると、次に新しい暦作りの長に任命される。天体観測と数理解析を重ねて、幕府は改暦を朝廷に請願するが…。（このあらすじは「goo 映画」サイトを参考にした。）

　算哲の努力ぶりと彼の妻となって助力するえん（宮崎あおい）の愛情がすがすがしく描かれている。ほかに和算家・関孝和（市川猿之助）も登場する。これらの優れた学者のいた江戸時代に、鎖国政策が日本の科学・技術の国際的な進展を妨げたのは残念なことである。いま、海外留学を望む若い人たちが減っている状況や、隣国との些細な領土問題で敵がい心をあおるような政治家の言葉やマスコミの報道を見ると、わが国はまだ鎖国時代から抜け切れていないように思われてならない。

Yesterday, I went to a nearby cinema complex to see the movie Tenchi: The Samurai Astronomer directed by Yojiro Takita, who won the 81st Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language Film. The film Tenchi is based on Tow Ubukata's bestselling historical novel Tenchi Meisatsu (Insight Into the Universe), and the hero Santetsu Yasui (later named Harumi or Shunkai Shibukawa) is a real person.

Santetsu (played by Jun'ichi Okada) was born into a family of Go-players for the Shogun. He is a gifted mathematician and astronomer whose lifelong passion is observing the stars. The chief of his clan, Masayuki Hoshina (Koshiro Matsumoto), orders Santetsu to observe the North Star from vantages throughout Japan for an accurate survey. On the way of the observation trip, Santetsu realizes that the calendar Japan had used for centuries is fundamentally flawed. ... (This synopsis has been adapted from that of emphasis site.)

Santetsu's effort and loving help by En (Aoi Miyazaki), who becomes his wife, are depicted in a refreshing manner. The mathematician Takakazu Seki (En'nosuke Ichikawa) also appears on some scenes. It is unfortunate that the results of science and technology of the Edo period with these brilliant scholars were prevented from becoming international because of the policy of sakoku (locked country). In Japan nowadays, there are the situations that the number of young people wishing to study abroad has decreased and that the words of some politicians and media reports are inflaming hostility against neighboring countries on the small territorial issues. These make me think that Japan is still under the effect of sakoku.
