In autumn, spherical fruits ripen black on the Chinese tallow tree (Euphorbiaceae family). Then, the peel is torn from the tip, finally to make three seeds, covered with a waxy substance, appear. By the time when all the leaves in autumn colors are lost, the tree shows conspicuously white seeds only, on all branches. Such an appearance is beneficial for this plant because birds find the seeds easily and disperse a lot of them after eating waxy substance. Photos above, taken during my walking exercise on November 24, 2011, show the different stages of the appearance of seeds displayed by different twigs of a single, large Chinese tallow tree.
