スイセン (Narcissus)

Narcissus という学名は、ギリシャ神話に登場する美少年ナルキッソスに由来する。神話によると、ナルキッソスは、その美しさにさまざまな相手から言い寄られたものの、高慢にはねつけ恨みを買った。ついには、そんな彼への呪いを聞き入れた復讐の女神ネメシスにより、水鏡に映った自分自身に恋してしまった。水面の中の像は、ナルキッソスの想いに決して応えることはなく、彼はそのまま憔悴して死ぬ。そして、その体は水辺でうつむきがちに咲くスイセンに変わった。だからこそスイセンは水辺であたかも自分の姿を覗き込むかのように咲くのである。——「スイセン属」、ウィキペディア：フリー百科事典［2012年12月26日 (水) 20:10］（一部不要と思われる語句を削除した）。

The derivation of the Latin narcissus (from the ancient Greek νάρκισσος) is unknown. It may be a loanword from another language. It is frequently linked to the Greek myth of Narcissus, who became so obsessed with his own reflection that as he knelt and gazed into a pool of water, he fell into the water and drowned. In some variations, he died of starvation and thirst. In both versions, the narcissus plant sprang from where he died. However, there is no evidence for this popular derivation, and the person's name may have come from the flower's name. Pliny wrote that the plant was named for its narcotic properties (ναρκάω narkao, "I grow numb" in Greek).
