山陽方面への旅 １ (Trip to San'yo Region -1-)

　11 月 20 日から 22 日まで、妻と山陽方面への旅に出かけた。広島県竹原市と山口県光市にある「かんぽの宿」の温泉に入って休養するのが主目的である。10:39 新大阪発の「こだま」で 12:48 に三原で下車。呉線 14:06 発に乗車するまでの間に、三原城跡を見物した。

　ウェブサイトにある広島県内の 200以上の城の訪問記中のこの城の記事の冒頭には、「数ある城跡の中でも三原城ほど交通の便のよいところは見当たらない」とある。JR 駅構内の北側に、ドアを開けるとすぐ登り階段の始まるところがあり、その階段が天守台跡（1 枚目の写真）に通じている。そもそも、明治時代に山陽本線を敷設した際に、城跡の一部を壊してそこに駅舎を作ったのだから、「交通の便」というほどのこともなく、接しているのである。

　小早川隆景が 1580 年代に本格的な水軍の城として整備し、櫓の数は 32、城門は 14 あり、天守閣は存在しなかったが、天守台は日本一の大きさだったと伝えられている。城は、海に浮かぶような姿をしていたところから、「浮城」と呼ばれた。いまは、石垣と堀だけが昔をしのばせている（2 枚目の写真）。

　携行した広島方面の旅行案内書（昭文社、1998）中の三原の地図には、駅の北側を東へ 400 m ばかり行ったところの、和久原川に掛かる橋の辺りに「古い街並」と記してある。そこまで歩いてみたが、一軒の大きな屋敷の古風な塀はあった（3 枚目の写真、左手）が、古い街並といえるような風景は残っていなかった。14 年も前の案内書に頼るのが間違っていたようだ。

From November 20 to 22, my wife and I went on a trip towards Sanyo region. Our primary objective was to have a rest in hot springs of Kampo hotels in Takehara, Hiroshima Prefecture, and Hikari, Yamaguchi Prefecture. We took Kodama super-express from Shin-Osaka at 10:39 and arrived at Mihara at 12:48 am. Before the departure of the KUre line train at 14:06, we went to see the ruins of Mihara Castle.

The Web article that introduces this castle among more than 200 castles in Hiroshima Prefecture writes at the beginning as follows: There are many ruins of castles, but none is more convenient to transportation than Mihara Castle." When one opens a door at the north side of the building of the JR Mihara station, there is the staircase that leads to ruins of the castle (the first photo). At the time of laying the railway of the San'yo line in Meiji Period, the station was built there to occupy part of the ruins. So, the station is directly connected to the ruins without the need of any means of transportation other than climbing the stairs.

Takakage Kobayakawa completed the Mihara Castle as a full-fledged naval castle in the 1580s. It is said that the castle had 32 turrets, 14 gates and the largest base area of the keep among the castles in Japan. From such a view of the castle as floating on the sea, the castle was called "Ukishiro" (Floating Castle). Presently, only stone walls and moats are redolent of the old days (the second photo).

The map of Mihara in the guidebook of HIroshima Prefecture (Shōbunsha, 1998) had a mark to indicate "a street lined with historic houses" near the bridge over the Wakuhara River just 400 m east from the north side of the Mihara station. So, we walked up there. Though there were old-fashioned fences of a single large house (at the left of the third photo), we did not find such a thing like "a street lined with historic houses." Relying on a book of 14 years ago seemed to have been wrong.
