三日見ぬ間に (During the Three Days When I Did Not Go Out, ...)

世の中は三日見ぬ間に桜かな
　　　——大島蓼太（1718～1787、江戸中期の俳人）

　この句は、「三日外に出ないでいたら、桜の花が咲き揃っている」という意味だったが、後に「世の中は三日見ぬ間の桜かな」と改変して、世間の移り変わりの早いことの例えとされるようになった。（『故事ことわざ事典』を参考にした。）

　大阪府で開花が発表された 3 月 27 日に、近くの堺市・笠池公園では、まだ開花といえない木々もあった。しかし、そのあと、ちょうど三日見に行かなかったところ、きょうは、もう満開に近い木々があった。

When I did not go out,
Cherry blossoms have been in full bloom.

This haiku was later modified a little to be used as a metaphor for quick changes of the world.

On March 27, blooming of cherry blossoms was announced in Osaka Prefecture. In Kasaike Park, Sakai, near my house, some cherry trees were not yet blooming at all at that time. I did not visit there just three days and have found today that there are some trees almost in full bloom.
