At 6:45 am on the thirteenth day, we departed the Stanford Plaza Auckland by bus and headed to Oakland International Airport. The trip is coming to an end at last. さる1月27日、NHK HV で「プレミアム 8：玄侑宗久 なりゆきを生きる」を見た。玄侑宗久氏は小説家で、臨済宗の僧侶でもある。彼の若い頃の精神的苦闘の話も興味深かったが、作品のヒントをどこに見つけたかという話が愉快であった。
宗久さんは、葬式に位牌を間違えて持って行ったことがあり、その二、三日後、故人の娘さんから連絡があった。このところ家で起こったことを見ると故人が成仏出来ていないのではないか、と尋ねられたのである。このとき、成仏とは何かについて考えさせられたことが、芥川賞作品「中陰の花」(2001) になったそうである。また、別の作品「アミターバ：無量光明」(2003) は、彼が、長く病床にあった義母から「そろそろお迎えが来るでしょうか」と問われて答えた言葉に後悔したことから生まれたということである。
この問いについて、宗久さんは「あなたなら何と答えますか」とインタービューアーの渡邊あゆみアナウンサーに尋ねた。彼女の答えは宗久さんが実際にした答えと同様で、「そんな気弱なことを言わないで、もっとがんばって生きて下さい」というようなものだった。他方、私は、宗久さんがこう答えればよかったと後で思った答えに近いものを思っていた。すなわち、この世を去るのは決して不安なことではなく、むしろ光明・幸福であることを話して上げる、というものである。私がこう思ったのは、年の功であろう。私には、いまや僧侶の資格があるといえようか。
On January 27, I watched the TV program of NHK Hi channel, "Premium 8 – To live as it will go: Genyū Soukyū*." Genyū Soukyū is a novelist and priest of Rinzai school. The story of struggle in his young days was gripping, and stories about how he found the hints of his novels were also quite entertaining.
Soukyū once went to a funeral with a wrong mortuary tablet, and, a few days later, the daughter of the deceased told him that, considering from what had happened in her house those days, she wondered if the deceased had been able to go to heaven. This made him think about "going to heaven," and his thought grew into the Akutagawa-Prize winning work Chuin-no-Hana (2001). Another novel Amitābha: Muryō-kōmyō (2003) was born when he regretted his answer to his mother-in-law who had been ill for a long time. Her question was: Shall I be picked up to heaven soon?
As for this question, Soukyū said to the interviewing announcer Ayumi Watanabe, "What would you answer this?" Her response was essentially the same as the one Soukyū actually made, namely, "Do not be weak, but be passionate to live." On the other hand, I thought something close to the reply that Soukyū later thought to have said: Going to heaven is not a fearful thing, but rather a bright and happy thing. Perhaps I thought of this from the wisdom of age. Am I now qualified to be a priest?
* For the expression of his name, I follow the one on the cover of his book, Chuin-no-Hana. His family name is Genyū and pronounced like gen-yū.
