(Wild daffodil)

Wild daffodil; botanical name, Narcissus pseudonarcissus L.; family, Amaryllidaceae. The photo was taken on March 27, 2011, in our yard. The flower of this plant usually blooms sidewise. However, the stem of the flower in the photo was lying down on the ground, so that I made it stand between the leaves of a nearby giant crinum lily. Then, the flower made its face turn upward.

The following is an e-mail message from a friend of mine in Ukraine, the country of the Chernobyl disaster (1986). The content is the words of sympathy to the Japanese people who have suffered from the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, so that I quote here the message with some modifications of his English.

March 22, 2011

Dear Ted

I and my friends in Ukraine with a deep sadness perceived information about frightful earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan, which resulted in human victims and caused considerable destructions.

Ukraine passed a similar way after a failure on the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. It was awful! Japan is an unusual country! People and country are very sympathetic on the whole. The Japanese are such people that very well understand us and support in all of questions. I hope that in return we understand the Japanese people and will support them in all of questions.

We are sincerely sure that the Japanese people will overcome crucibles, bravely fighting them out; and the land of the rising sun will continue to surprise the world with the firmness of spirit, unique culture and new achievements. Your national self-control, courage, orderliness and the ability to meet all the challenges with dignity lead not only to respect and admiration, but also to the confidence that your people will be able to restore the living standards typical of you.

We in Ukraine commiserate with those who lost their loved ones in this tragedy and those who do not know the fate of their relatives and friends. We have confidence in your courage and patience. Our hearts are with you.

Please accept my condolences,

S (A. F. A)

I hope you still remember me.

I replied as follows:

March 22, 2011

Dear S,

It's the greatest joy to hear from you after some years. I well remember you and have sometimes been thinking of you. I sincerely thank you for your kind words of encouragement and condolences to us, the Japanese people, who are suffering from the colossal disaster and accident triggered by the earthquake.

All of my relatives, families and I have been quite safe. However, I, an ex-radiation physicist, am much worrying about the situation of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant and wishing that they can overcome the difficulties soon. The towns swallowed by the tsunami show the state of complete devastation just like that after the air raids in the World War II. Japan rose to a flourishing country after the war in the course of many years. So, I would like to believe that such a recovery would come again to the eastern region of Japan.

Thanking you repeatedly,

Best regards,
Ted

2 (Human Factors of Accident at Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant - 2 -)

(Modified March 26, 2011)

[Abstract] A comment from a friend of mine on part 1 of this article is quoted. He explains what is stated in reference 3 of that article. The Asahi Shimbun of this morning carried an article that pointed out the neglect, by the Tokyo Electric Power Company, of the possibility of a high tsunami and a big earthquake specialists had been warning. This is also one of the human factors of the present accident. Hitoshi Yoshioka of Kyushu University writes about the backgrounds of those factors in the same newspaper. The present author infers that the underlying cause of the the backgrounds is the adhesion of industries and politics by "polytical fund." (The main text is given in Japanese only.)

1 (Human Factors of Accident at Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant - 1 -)

[Abstract] Possible human factors of the accident at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant the author have learned on the Internet are described. One is the fact that the Japanese government ignored the right questions made in the committees of the House of Representatives of Japan from 2005 to 2007. The other is the fact that the Tokyo Electric Power Company repeatedly missed safety checks over a 10-year period and allowed uranium fuel rods to pile up inside the 40-year-old facility. (The main text is given only in Japanese).

(Units of Sievert and Becquerel)

Abstract: Units of sievert and becquerel are explained. Limits on external exposure to ionizing radiation and intake of radioactive materials are mentioned. (The main text is only in Japanese.)

(Super "Perigee Moon")

The full Moon at 3:10 AM on March 20, 2011 (Japan time) was a super "perigee moon (Moon of the closest approach to Earth)." The last full Moon so large and close to Earth occurred in March of 1993, and perigee moons are about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser moons that occur on the apogee side of the Moon's orbit [1]. Seeing the Moon overhead without reference things to provide a scale, we cannot tell the difference of its size from the usual one. Anyway, I took a photo at 9:54 PM on March 19, a little earlier than the full Moon, though my compact digital camera cannot get a clear shot of moons. What is seen at the bottom of the above photo is a neighbor's roof.

I earlier wrote a blog post entitled "Growing Up of Air Plant Flowers." This time, I post a collection of pictures showing the development of a single flower of the same plant, the botanical name of which is Kalanchoe pinnata. The calyx of air plant typically grows downward into an elongated cylindrical body. However, we found the odd flower whose calyx had a large crack and stopped growing at an early stage. Because of the crack, we were able to observe how petals grow inside that calyx. We named that flower "Ms. Please-look-at-me," and kept watching it and taking photos of it. The above image shows a collection of selected photos.

The dates when these photos were taken are, from upper left to right, February 12, March 4 and March 9; and from bottom left to right, March 12, March 14 and March 15. In normal flowers, only the tip portion, with a slight outward curling (see the last photo), of petals can be seen at the bottom of the calyx (at lower right of the last photo, the thing that looks like a light brown tail of a normal calyx is a withered cluster of petals). Ms. Please-look-at-me specially has showed us the whole of her petals.

At first, we saw little and white spheres of less than 1 mm in diameter and wondered if this would grow into flowers. Since then, more than a month had passed until we saw the state shown in the first photo. It again took almost the same duration from the state of the first photo to the state of flowering in the sixth photo.

Reconstruction in the eastern Japan, where the mighty earthquake caused an enormous damage, will require much longer duration than the growth of this flower. However, I wish that it is achieved as soon as possible with the cooperation of all the people of Japan.

From one of them, a stem grew up exceptionally early in spite of cold days of early March, and a flower has bloomed (the photo was taken on March 12, 2011). I wish that those who suffered from the big earthquake in eastern Japan can quickly recover from damage.

(Accident at Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant)

On Saturday March 12, an explosion occurred, under the influence of the great earthquake in eastern Japan, at the Unit 1 reactor of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company; and the upper half of the reactor building was destroyed. As for fuel in the reactor, Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency announced, "It is strongly possible that the melting of them has proceeded," and the article of Asahi Shimbun dated Sunday March 13 described like above.

However, the headline of that article, printed in a big font, say, "Reactor Core Melts, Fukushima Nuclear Plant" (upper right of the above photo). Is not this an exaggeration? When they say, "The melting has proceeded," there can be different extents from the melting of a small portion of the core to the entire melting. Reading simply "Core Melts," we are led to believe that the entire core has fully melted.

My saying the above does not mean that I think the accident is minor. Rather I think that learning from the lessons of this accident, the national policy of making nuclear reactors provide a high percentage of the electric power should be reconsidered in our country, where earthquakes occur frequently. Critical reports on this accident, such as [1] – [4], are found in the overseas media.

Note added later: I got a comment, "We need accurate information quickly." On the occasion of accidents, it is certainly vital to convey accurate information quickly. As for nuclear accident in particular, hiding of information should not be made. Hiding leads to excessive anxiety and defects in protection.

(Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake)

気象庁は、この地震を「平成23 年(2011 年)東北地方太平洋沖地震」と命名した(英語の名称は "The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku earthquake")。

The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku earthquake was an 8.8 to 9.1 MW, making it the largest earthquake to hit Japan and one of the five largest earthquakes in the world since modern record-keeping began ['2011 Sendai earthquake and tsunami,' Wikipedia (12 March 2011 at 02:14); the name of the earthquake has been replaced by the one officially determined by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA)].

The damage caused by this earthquake and associated tsunami is being clarified. The picture above shows the Japanese newspapers reporting terrible states of things.

I express sincere sympathy to the sufferers from this disaster.

Note added later: On Sunday, March 13, the JMA determined the magnitude of this earthquake as 9.0 MW.

(Hana Peach)

Hana peach; botanical name, Prunus persica; family, Rosaceae. The photo was taken on March 10, 2011, in Ōtori Park. There, one of four hana peach trees was seen to have begun blooming, but the other trees still had only buds. I took the picture of the same blossoms there on March 11, 2010, and saw more blossoms blooming then.

(Flowering Quince)

This winter and early March, we had many cold days. Thus, blooming of different flowers seem to come to bloom later than usual. The above picture of the blossoms of "flowering quince," taken in Tsukuno Minami Danchi on March 8, 2011, shows just the beginning of blooming. The photo of the same tree, taken on March 3, 2010, showed a lot of blossoms.

(Hellebores)

The "ヘレボルス" page of the Japanese version of Wikipedia is linked to the "Hellebore" page of the English version, and the description there is as follows:

Commonly known as hellebores, members of the genus Helleborus comprise approximately 20 species of herbaceous perennial flowering plants in the family Ranunculaceae, within which it gave its name to the tribe of Helleboreae. [. . .] The most popular hellebores for garden use, however, are undoubtedly H. orientalis and its colourful hybrids (H. × hybrids). They flower in early spring, around the period of Lent, and are often known as Lenten hellebores, oriental hellebores, or Lenten roses. (2 March 2011 at 23:54)

The photo was taken in our yard on March 7, 2011.

(M.Y's Comments on the Posts of February 2011)

[In Japanese only]

(Christchurch Earthquake)

(Symposium on Prostate Cancer)

2 (Ume Blossoms in Kozen Park 2)

Yesterday, I posted pictures of scenes in Kozen Park, where ume blossoms were blooming. Today and tomorrow, I will post some photos of different cultivars of ume blossoms. The first piece shows "kenkyo"; and the second, "yaeyabai." "Kenkyo" means "to see and be surprised at," and perhaps is the name to compliment the stunning beauty of this cultivar. Thinking that the picture of them should deserve their name, I felt it difficult to shoot these blossoms. Another photo of "kenkyo" has been posted on the other site. "Yae" of "yaeyabai" means the double flower. (The photos were taken on March 5, 2011.)

(Ume Blossoms in Kozen Park)

I visit Kozen Park each year during the season of ume (Japanese apricot) blossoms. The park is located at the distance of about an hour's walk from my house. This year, I had the latest ever ume blossom viewing there of mine yesterday. Usually I go there in the morning, but it was pretty cold yesterday, so that I left home after lunch. There are many different cultivars of ume trees in Kozen park, and some trees still had only buds. The park seemed to be suitable for viewing ume blossoms through more than ten days to come.

(The Essai on Essais)

Abstract: The outline of Kiyokazu Murao's essay entitled "Essais – The Genre of Literature for Adults: A View on the Fact and Fiction" (Gakushikaiho, p. 66, March 2011, in Japanese) is given together with my relevant thoughts. The auhtor says that the necessary and sufficient conditions of an attractive essay are (1) showing the author's personality, (2) being free enough in the style and thoughts, and (3) being interesting so as to make one's eyes open. (The main text is available only in Japanese.)

私は "The Art of the Personal Essay: An Anthology from the Classical Era to the Present" (edited by Phillip Lopate, Anchor Books, 1994) という本を持っている。

Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (Bantam, 1974) p. From Eternity to Here: The Quest for the Ultimate Theory of Time (Dutton Adult, 2010) p.
