(Anemone)

Anemone; botanical name, Anemone coronaria; family, Ranunculaceae. The photo was taken in our yard on March 19, 2012.

Yesterday, it was a pretty cold Vernal Equinox Day as if nature of our country forgot the saying, "Just as hot weather does not last past the autumnal equinox, cold weather does not last past the spring equinox." However, spring seems to be just around the corner.

Note added later: In Japan, it was colder than usual this winter, but in the eastern U.S., it was warmer than usual. See Ref. 1.

(M.Y's Comments on My Blog Posts of February 2012)

[In Japanese only]

2 (Good Old Days of Requesting Reprints -2-)

When writing the first part of this story, I discarded about one-third of postcards for reprint request, which I had received in later years of my working period. After that, the remaining two bundles, which had arrived from the 1960s to 1976, came out. This time, I counted the number of cards. They amounted a total of 137. Fifty-four cards among them (about 40%) had postage stamps; and the others, pressed stamps of payment receipt. The percentage of cards that carried postage stamps were larger than I thought.

In the above image, all the three cards on the left came from the United States. I received the top one from the late John Hubbell (1925–2007; well known in the scientific community for his evaluations, computations and compilations of photon cross sections and attenuation coefficients) at the National Bureau of Standards (presently National Institute of Standards and Technology, NBS). He very often requested me a reprint by the same picture card, on which a bird's-eye view of new (in those days) NBS buildings was printed.

The postcard below Hubbell's is the one specially made for reprint requesting, so that the portion for the sender could be peeled off for use on the envelope of the packet to send a reprint. At the bottom left is a card called "Request-a-print," made by the Institute for Scientific Information. Two portions can be peeled off from this card. The upper is for the addressee and is pasted to the front side of the postcard. The lower is for the sender. The type face in the latter portion is different from that in the former and is considered as the computer output used for multiple cards at once. I received both these two cards in 1976 and thought that they were quite appropriate products. However, use of email began after about 20 years, and those convenient cards might also have become obsolete.

Four postcards on the right of the above picture are from countries of names not so often heard of (in the meaning of either "currently not so often …" or "not so often … in our research area at least"). From the top to bottom, they came from the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR; CCCP in Russian), former Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR or East Germany), People's Republic of Romania (now simply called Romania) and Portugal (officially the Portuguese Republic). In the former USSR and DDR, there were researchers energetically studying topics similar to ours, and we had some academic interactions. However, we probably had no contact with researchers in Portugal and Romania except for sending reprints requested.

(Belated Spring Seems to Be Coming)

It was considerably colder than usual this winter. We heard many news stories of damage caused by snow. Yesterday, it snowed for a short time even in this area of Sakai. It was also cold this morning but has become sunny weather. It seems that spring is coming at last. The above photo of a dandelion was taken during my walking practice the day before yesterday.

(One Year from the 2011 Earthquake of the Pacific Coast of Tōhoku)

Today, it is just one year from the 2011 Earthquake of the Pacific Coast of Tōhoku. I place here a photo (taken on March 8) of a camellia flower, the red color of which looks like to symbolize a bright future, wishing the rapid revival of the affected areas.

2.2%! (My Number is 2.2% of Einstein's!)

【Read in English.】

(White Plum Blossoms Are also Blooming)

The other day, only blossoms of deep pink colors were seen in the "small plum garden" at the side of my walking route. Presently, we also see white (or pale pink) blossoms blooming there (see the top photo, which was taken on March 6).

White blossoms are also blooming now on a small plum tree in our garden. The number of the blossoms is larger this year than usual. However, this tree has blossoms only sparsely, so that a picture of the whole tree would not look marvelous. Thus, I took a picture of only the twigs that had some flowers (middle and bottom photos; taken on March 7).

(The Vigorous Writer of Letters to Overseas Colleagues)

While discarding old and unnecessary things, I was surprised to find that I had so many files of business letters that came from overseas researchers during my working years. (See the above photo. Files without specification contain letters from 1995 to 2001). These files indicate that I wrote almost the same number of letters to foreign researchers. In addition to these files, there are two other, similar files. Those files contain letters from the editors and referees about my contribution to overseas journals. Domestic letters were also contained in separate files, most of which were already discarded.

Recently I read an article on the web site, which wrote about the biography of Einstein by Walter Isaacson. There was the following passage:

I was fascinated by the amount of handwritten letters that went back and forth across continents and between friends, family, and work colleagues; people got so much done back then even without email!

My letter to foreign researchers were not written by hand but written with a typewriter earlier and with a personal computer later. Between these two methods, I used, for a short time, the device of the name "Mypewriter" that hit keys of an IBM electric typewriter by the signals from a personal computer. I probably started to use e-mail from 1995, but the exchange of letters by postal mail did not disappear soon.

(Good Old Days of Requesting Reprints)

Hideko Yamasita proposed the life technique called danshari. Danshari aims "not only to abandon mental attachment to things and make clean around oneself but also to free one's mind from stress." As if following her advice, I'm now discarding old documents, etc, from my working years. Among them, there was a large stack of postcards that requested reprints of our papers. The cards, shipped from universities and institutes, mostly came with the receipt stamp of the post office, but a small percentage of them had postage stamps. The above picture shows part of the latter kind. These days, reprints can quickly be requested by email or downloaded from the publisher's Web site. So, such postcards have become a relic of a bygone era.

(Fruits of Japanese Aucuba)
