東京で、２０１３年春 -１- (In Tokyo, Spring 2013 -1-)

　4月3日（水）、東京・四谷の「スクワール麹町」2 階の「レストラン アビアン」で開催の金沢菫台（きんだい）高校5期生（1954 年卒）・関東同窓会に参加するため、2日（火）に上京した。到着時から同窓会終了まで、あいにくの雨で、とくに 3 日午前中は風も強かった。それでも，会場のビルの玄関や窓から、また帰途の JR 駅で、四谷周辺のサクラの見える風景の写真を撮ることが出来た。

　2 日夕方には、同窓会幹事の一人、MR 君（"Ted's Archives" に連載中の高校時代の日記に登場する Twelve 君）が私の定宿・学士会館へ会いに来てくれて、同会館の和食レストラン「二色」で夕食をとりながら、昔の思い出などを語り合った。

　同窓会の参加者は 9 名（うち女性 1 名）。正午から食事をしながら、談論風発。終りに校歌「古城の東 菫台（すみれだい）」を斉唱し、われわれ一同が 80 歳になる 3 年後まではこの会を続けようと誓い合って散会した。（つづく）

On Tuesday, April 2, I went to Tokyo to participate in the Kanto Region Reunion of 1954 Graduates from Kanazawa Kindai Senior High School. The reunion was held on Wednesday, April 3, in Yotsuya. Unfortunately, it rained from the time of my arrival at Tokyo to the end of the reunion, and the strong wind also blew in the morning of Wednesday. However, I was able to take some pictures of landscapes with cherry blossoms around Yotsuya, viewed from the entrance and the windows of the reunion site as well as from the JR station.

In the Tuesday evening, a friend of mine, MR, who was one of the managers of the reunion, came to see me to Gakushikaikan, where I stayed. We talked about our memories of old days over dinner at the Japanese restaurant "Nishiki" there.

The number of participants in the reunion was nine including a woman. The meeting began at noon, and we talked much over dinner. Finally we sang the school song "Kojo no higashi Sumiredai (At the east of the old castle is Sumiredai)" together and decided to hold our reunion for more three years at least, when all of us would be 80 years old. 鹿教湯温泉 ５ (Kakeyu Hot Spring -5-)

　月見堂と稲荷神社を経て展望台までの上り道は、登山が趣味の妻には散歩程度のものだが、私にとってはちょっとした登山であった。小石や落ちている小枝、松笠、ぬれているところなどを踏んで滑らないようにとの妻の注意に助けられながら到着した。展望台へ登った詳細は、以下に写真を使って説明する。

Going the way through Tsukimi-do and Inari Shrine and up to the observatory was an easy task for my wife, whose hobby is mountaineering. However, it was a pretty hard work for me. I arrived at the observatory with the help of my wife's warning words so as not to slip by stepping on pebbles, fallen twigs, pine cones and wet soil. Details of our climbing to the observatory are described below by the use of photos.


月見堂（堂内の人物は妻）。説明板には「昔から、月見の名所として知られています。とくに中秋の名月は見事で、満月が鹿教湯富士、独鈷山（とっこさん）、秋葉山（あきばさん）、渋田見山（しぶたみやま）などの山並を照らします」とある
（読み仮名は筆者が調べて追加した）。
Tsukimi-do (Hall for moon viewing); the person inside is my wife. The explanatory board says, "Since early days this site has been noted as an excellent location for enjoying the moonlight. The harvest moon viewed from here is particularly impressive, and the moonlight brightens the mountain range consisting of Mts. Kakeyu-fuji, Tokko, Akiba, Shibutami, etc.

稲荷神社、といっても祠（ほこら）程度のものである。
Inari Shrine, which is quite a small sheine to be better called hokora.

展望台。説明板には「鹿教湯温泉を眼下におさめ、四季折々、内村川、長沢川に沿った美しい田園風景が見られます。お腹の底から大きな声で叫んでみるのも一興です」とある。この説明文は帰宅後写真を見て読んだので、残念ながら「一興」を試みなかった。堂内に吊るされているサイン帳に私たち夫婦の名、区名までの住所、日付け、
二人の合計年齢を書いて来た。
Observatory. The explanatory board says, "The whole landscape of Kakeyu Spa Town lies below, and you can see countrysides with distinct beauty of each season, along the Uchimura and Nagasawa rivers. It would be a fun to try shouting here in a loud voice." I read this description on this photo after returning home, and it is unfortunate that we did not try shouting. An autograph book was hanging there, and I wrote our names and address, the date and the sum of our ages in it.

　温泉街へ下りて、「信州手打ちそば 辰巳屋」で、くるみそばの昼食をとる。つゆにくるみ味噌を入れて食するもので、美味だった。食後、内村ダムまで歩いてみようと思った。しかし、ホテルで貰った「鹿教湯温泉案内図」がその辺りについては不親切であり、たどった道が正しいかどうか分らなくて、途中で断念した。温泉街へ戻り、喫茶店「清涼堂」でひと休みした。ホテルへ帰ってから温泉へ入り夕食をとるまでの時間を読書（私は持参の本、妻はホテルの図書室で借りた文庫本）で過ごした。——帰宅する日（ 3 月 10 日）には少し寒くなったものの、温かい日々に恵まれたよい旅だった。（完）

Coming down to the spa town, we took a lunch of "kurumi soba (buckwheat noodles with walnut miso)" at "Tatsumiya for Shinshu handmade soba." People eat it by putting walnut miso in a soap as they like it. We found it quite tasty. After lunch, we wanted to take a walk to Uchimura Dam. However, "Information Map of Kakeyu Spa" we got at the hotel was not clear enough about the way to go there, and it was uncertain if we were taking the right path. So, we gave up to get there on our way. Back to the spa town, we had a rest at a cafe "Seiryo-do." Then, we had spent time by reading (I read the book brought with me, and my wife, a paperback borrowed in the library of the hotel) until we took spa bathing and dinner. — Though it was a little cold on the day of going back home (March 10), we had a lovely trip blessed with warm days. 「さくらさくら」(Cherry Blossoms, Cherry Blossoms)

　サクラの咲く季節になると、この辺りにもサクラの木がずいぶん多いことに気づく。ウォーキング道筋の幼稚園、小学校、中学校、団地、工場、公園、これらのどこにも、いまソメイヨシノが咲き誇っている（写真は昨日撮影。上記の場所を表す普通名詞のうちには、ウォーキング道筋に複数存在するものがいくつもあるが、各 1 ヵ所の写真を選び、普通名詞の記載順に並べた）。「さくらさくら」の歌がおのずと思い出される。

　「さくら さくら、やよいの空は、見わたす限り、かすみか雲か、匂いぞ出ずる、いざや いざや、見にゆかん」。これはオリジナル版で、1941 年改版は「さくら さくら、野山も里も、見わたす限り、かすみか雲か、朝日ににおう、さくら さくら、花ざかり」（『ウィキペディア: フリー百科事典』の「さくらさくら」による）。

When the cherry blossom season comes, we see that there are a lot of cherry trees also in this area. Yoshino cherry trees are in full bloom now everywhere along the course of my walking exercise, for example, in kindergartens, elementary schools, a junior high school, a housing complex, parks and plants (photos above were taken yesterday; for those places existing in plural numbers, a single representative photo has been chosen, and the photos are arranged in the order of the common names of the place given above). The song "Sakura Sakura" comes naturally in my mind.

"Cherry blossoms, cherry blossoms, Across the spring sky, As far as you can see. Is it a mist, or clouds? Fragrant in the air. Come now, come now, Let's look, at last!" This is the original version. The version revised in 1941 is as follows: "Cherry blossoms, cherry blossoms, In fields and villages As far as you can see. Is it a mist, or clouds? Fragrant in the morning sun. Cherry blossoms, cherry blossoms, Flowers in full bloom." (The translations of lylics have been quoted from "Sakura Sakura" in Wikipedia: The free Encyclopedia.)

鈴の宮公園でサクラ 3 種、そろって見頃 (Three Kinds of Cherry at Their Best in Suzunomiya Park)

　堺市・鈴の宮公園では、ソメイヨシノ、ヤマザクラ、オオシマザクラが、そろって、ほとんど見頃を迎えている。ソメイヨシノは花期に葉はまだ出ないのに対し、ヤマザクラとオオシマザクラはそれぞれ花と同時に赤い葉、緑の葉が出始める。それで、遠目にはヤマザクラは赤みがかって、オオシマザクラは緑がかって見える。

In Suzunomiya Park, Sakai, blossoms of Yoshino cherry, Japanese cherry and Oshima cherry are almost in full bloom. Whereas leaves of Yoshino cherry do not yet come out in the flowering season, Japanese cherry and Oshima cherry begin to produce green and red leaves, respectively, at the same time as their blossoms. Thus, the distant view of Japanese cherry blossoms is reddish, and that of Oshima cherry has a greenish hue.

ユキヤナギの花弁 (Petals of Thunberg Spirea)

　わが家の庭は家の南側にあって、道路に直角に細長く奥へ向って続いている。その道路側に来客用駐車スペースをとってある（わが家に車を運転する者はいない）。そのスペースの脇に、近年、ユキヤナギがひとりでに生えて来た。

　さる 3 月 14 日にその花の写真を撮って驚いた。花弁の先が尖っているのである（1 枚目の写真）。しかし、この木をよく見ると、多くの枝では花弁は丸い形であり（2 枚目の写真）、尖った花弁の花をつけている枝はいずれも、来客の車に擦れないようにと、昨秋遅くに剪定したものに限られている。2 枚目の写真の花の形は、庭の奥の方に以前からあるユキヤナギの木の花（3 枚目の写真）に似ている。ただし、公園などのユキヤナギの花を見て回ると、いずれも丸い花弁でありながら、花弁同士が少し重なり合って花を形作っているところが、わが家のものと異なる（4 枚目の写真；わが家に近い笠池公園で撮影）。

　以上の観察から次のことが推定される。(1) わが家の庭に新しく生えたユキヤナギは、以前からあった木の種子から生まれたものである。(2) 先の尖っている花弁は、枝の剪定時期の影響で生じた一種の変形である（文献 1 によれば、ユキヤナギの花芽の花弁形成期は秋に気温が低下してから始まるということであり、これもこの推定の参考になる）。

My yard is located on the south side of the house and has an elongated shape with the longer side at the right angle to the road. Part of the yard near the road is kept for the parking space for visitors. On a side of this space, a new tree of Thunberg spirea began to grow spontaneously in a recent year.

I was surprised to take a picture of blossoms of this tree on March 14 (the top photo). These blossoms have petals that have a pointed end. Looking at the tree closely, however, I found that most twigs had blossoms of round petals (the second photo). Further, the petals with a pointed end were seen only on the twigs which were pruned in late last fall not to touch the cars of visitors. The shape of the blossoms in the second photo is similar to that of blossoms on another tree of Thunberg spirea present at the back of my yard since many years ago (the third photo). I also found that all the blossoms of this plant in nearby parks have round petals but that those petals were overlapping a little in making a blossom (the fourth photo), distinctly from the petals of the blossoms in my yard.

From these observations, the followings can be supposed: (1) The new tree of Thunberg spirea in my yard has grown from a seed of the old tree in my yard. (2) The petals with a pointed end are a kind of malformation produced by the effect of pruning time.
