A friend of mine, S.Y, is a member of an association of abstract arts, Shinshō Sakka Kyōkai. So, I get an invitation to the traveling exhibition of this association held in Kyoto and Osaka every year. She is one of my classmates in Dalian Reizen Elementary School and now lives in Soma, Fukushima Prefecture. During the exhibition in Kyoto, she always comes there. However, we shall be able to see each other in Tokyo next month on the occasion of the reunion of the elementary school. Therefore, I saw this year's Shinshō Exhibition at Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts on September 22.
S.Y's work is always an abstract painting in which some concentric circular or oval shapes are arranged, so that we can identify it as hers at a glance. This may mean that her style has been firmly established and has become one of representative styles in her association. The title of every work of hers includes the word "DAIREN" meaning Dalian, in order to express her nostalgic feeling to the hometown. Last year, her work was entitled "DAIREN–Quake–3.11", and a relatively strong color tone compared with her earlier works was used to depict sorrow of the victims of the Tōhoku earthquake and rage against nuclear accidents.
The title of S.Y's painting of this year was "DAIREN-(FUKUSIMA) 2012". I thought that it depicted the remains of suffering from the earthquake and the nuclear accidents by dripping of some colors but that an atmosphere of hope was visible (though, in reality, recovery from the earthquake including clarifying of all the aspects of and compensation for the nuclear accidents is quite far from complete). Many works of other painters who had made their works too ambitiously had something to repel my mind. On the other hand, S.Y's work made me feel that my mind was drawn toward it. This is not because of the fact that I know the painter but probably because of the mild color tone, the black circle like an pupil of an eye at the center, etc. of her work of this time. You can see photos of the work in her blog post about Shinshō Exhibition held in Tokyo (in the second photo, the painter stands at the side of her work).

[Haha no Isan: Shimbun Shōsetsu (Inheritance from Mother: Newspaper Novel)]
[Abstract] While having relatively short time for reading every day recently, I finished reading Minae Mizumura's Haha no Isan: Shimbun Shōsetsu (Inheritance from Mother: Newspaper Novel) (524 pp.) within a small number of days. This novel includes not only serious problems many people have now or will encounter in the future but also entertaining factors such as a romantic affair and a mystery-like episode. I believe that this is a highly well-written and successful piece comparable to her earlier works, all of which got prestigious prizes. (Main text is given in Japanese only.)

(This Is Also Return Blooming)
The photo above, taken on September 21, 2012, shows a flower of alstroemeria in a pot of our house. Usually, this plant blooms in May or June. This time, only one stem showed two flowers. So, this may also be return blooming like the flowers of Brunfelsia latifolia, the photo of which I posted the other day.

(The Film Tenchi: The Samurai Astronomer)
The poster of the film Tenchi: The Samurai Astronomer. Taken from the Web page of Asian Wiki.
Yesterday, I went to a nearby cinema complex to see the movie Tenchi: The Samurai Astronomer directed by Yojiro Takita, who won the 81st Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language Film. The film Tenchi is based on Tow Ubukata's bestselling historical novel Tenchi Meisatsu (Insight Into the Universe), and the hero Santetsu Yasui (later named Harumi or Shunkai Shibukawa) is a real person.
Santetsu (played by Jun'ichi Okada) was born into a family of Go-players for the Shogun. He is a gifted mathematician and astronomer whose lifelong passion is observing the stars. The chief of his clan, Masayuki Hoshina (Koshiro Matsumoto), orders Santetsu to observe the North Star from vantages throughout Japan for an accurate survey. On the way of the observation trip, Santetsu realizes that the calendar Japan had used for centuries is fundamentally flawed. ... (This synopsis has been adapted from that of emphasis site.)
Santetsu's effort and loving help by En (Aoi Miyazaki), who becomes his wife, are depicted in a refreshing manner. The mathematician Takakazu Seki (En'nosuke Ichikawa) also appears on some scenes. It is unfortunate that the results of science and technology of the Edo period with these brilliant scholars were prevented from becoming international because of the policy of sakoku (locked country). In Japan nowadays, there are the situations that the number of young people wishing to study abroad has decreased and that the words of some politicians and media reports are inflaming hostility against neighboring countries on the small territorial issues. These make me think that Japan is still under the effect of sakoku.

(Toshihiko Miura's "Russell's Paradox")
[Abstract] The other day, I finished reading the book "Russell's Paradox" written by Toshihiko Miura in Japanese. The author describes in this book not only Russell's Paradox but also Russell's contribution to logic in a manner understandable to lay-readers. I began to read this book several years ago, put aside until a recent day and continued reading from just the page where I left before. So, it is difficult for me to summarize the whole of this book. Instead, I write only about a point I had worried about and found to be solved soon. In the description of the "atomic sentence" and the "atomic fact," Miura writes that Russell thought there was no "molecular fact." This made me wonder if this is obviously so. However, it was soon proved that my understanding was close to Russell's own, because Miura added as follows: Russell thought that he might need to reconsider about the elimination of "molecular facts." (Main text is given in Japanese only.)
