One of the photos taken by the late Kotoyuki Okano and used as a reference for the laboratory scene of the movie "Gift of Fire"
I had copies of them and provided them to NHK via Akira Masaike.

From 1944 to 1945, in the laboratory of Professor Bunsaku Arakatsu, Faculty of Science, Kyoto Imperial University, they conducted rudimentary research on the atomic bomb with the funds of the Navy. The drama "Gift of Fire" based on this matter was broadcast on NHK on August 15, 2020, and its movie version has been screened since August 6 this year. Casting is the same. From the explanations found on the internet, the main difference between the two versions seems to be only in the last scene.
Both Akira Masaike, the author of "Bunsaku Arakatsu and the Dawn of Nuclear Physics," and I studied under Professor Kiichi Kimura, the successor to Professor Arakatsu. A few years ago, Masaike consulted with me, saying that NHK asked him materials related to the Arakatsu/Kimura laboratory. Then, I sent the copies of two photos of the experimental room in Kimura Laboratory to him (the late Kotoyuki Okano took them, the image of one of which is shown above). After that, I heard from Masaike that those were helpful to NHK.
In the drama version, I did not notice which scene was based on the photos. Recently, however, I saw the video (quoted below) about the partial story in the laboratory of Gift of Fire on YouTube and was able to identify it. The cuts in the 26th to 28th seconds of the video show the inside of the measurement room. The room is under the Cockcroft-Walton accelerator and includes beam ducts and an electromagnet. The arrangement of them is similar to that in the above picture. Note that the left and right are reversed in the photo and movie scene.
The researcher at the center in the scene of the measurement room is Assistant Professor Kiichi Kido, played by Masaki Miura and modeled on Professor Kiichi Kimura in his young days.
