1 (Visited Toyama -1-)

Bon or obon is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the spirits of one's ancestors. It is commonly celebrated on August 15 based on the lunar calendar. However, it is celebrated on or around July 15 based on the solar calendar in Tokyo, Yokohama, old town of Shizuoka, Hakodate, Kanazawa, etc. ("Obon" in Wikipedia Japanese edition). Since my hometown is Kanazawa, it has become our home tradition to go to Kanazawa and visit the graves of our ancestors in the middle of July, after my retirement.

This year, my wife and I went a little far from Kanazawa before visiting the graves. Namely, we stayed at the night of July 13 at the hotel Kampo-no-yado Toyama, Fuchu-cho, Toyama. From the station of Hayahoshi of JR Takayama line, we took the courtesy car of the hotel. If it had been fine weather, we should have been able to see the splendid view of the Tateyama mountain range and the Toyama plain. Though it was, unfortunately, cloudy with intermittent rain, we had no rain along the way and enjoyed fresh seafood from Toyama Bay, a green landscape of Fuchu Furusato Nature Park in the vicinity of the hotel and slow pace of the local-line trip. I show photos taken during this trip in this and the next blog post.

40 (Cruise on Canals in the Netherlands and Belgium -40-)

The map of "Floriade 2012" we visited on April 23. The original, distributed to visitors, is of the size of about 60 cm × 40 cm. Clicking on the above image, you can see the expanded one. However, the characters will still be too small to read. The image is put here only to show the vastness of the venue, which seems to be as large as about two times of Keukenhof.

A view from the roof of the cylindrical pavilion Rabo Earthwalk, which is located at a little upper left from the center in the above map (in fact, what is cylindrical is the outer frame, and the building is of a semi-sphere upside-down). The high, rectangular building in the photo is of the name Innovatoren. It is 70-m high and is the Floriade icon designed by Jo Coenen. After the expo, it will become part of Venlo Green Park.

This photo also shows the landscape of the venue. At the dome on the right, a three-minutes, 360-degree film that expresses the relationship between diverse and rich Duch horticulture and life is on display.

In each photo shown above, some cabins running in air are seen. Those make a gondola system 30-m high and 1.1-km long. During Floriade, this gondola brings visitors from one side of the park to the other in five minutes and makes them appreciate the impressive landscaping and design of the park.

(M.Y's Comments on My Blog Posts of June 2012)

[This post is in Japanese only.]

39 (Cruise on Canals in the Netherlands and Belgium -39-)

In the morning of April 23, we went from the Roermond port to Venlo by the bus ride of about 30 minutes, in order to see "Floriade 2012: World Horticultural Expo" being held there from 5 April to 7 October 2012. The Expo is held once every 10 years.

Due to the mistake of communication between the travel agency and the bus company, buses came to pick up us much belatedly. Thus, I made the above sketch of a green square near the Roermond port while waiting. This is my last sketch of this tour.

When we entered the venue, high-feet dancers, similar to those seen in China, greeted us by dancing. In a map of "Floriade 2012," there is a place named "Foot Kiss for Butterflies." Those dancers represented butterflies! Due to wind or their body movement, their wings went up high, so that they are not seen much like butterflies in these shots.
