湯川の「うつしえ」(Yukawa's Utushi-e)

　私はかつて湯川秀樹の自伝『旅人』の英訳に間違いが沢山あることに気づき、訳者の一人であるブラウンさんに正誤表を送った。その中には「うつしえ」の訳 "shadow pictures" を "transfer pictures" に直した一項を含めていた。旅人の中の「うつしえ」は、湯川が子どもの頃、祭りの店で売っていたものの一つとして書いてあり、"shadow pictures" といえば、売るというより実演するものだと思ったからである。また、私が子どもの頃には、「うつしえ」といえば、いろいろな絵を特殊な方法でプリントしてある紙を裏からこすって、絵を別の紙に転写する「移し絵」を意味した。しかし、湯川の子どもの頃には、幻灯で「写し絵」をして遊ぶための、セロファン紙に絵を描いたような、いまのスライドに相当するものが売られていたのかもしれないとも思い（このことも注記しておいた）、この修正には自信がなかった。

　この、湯川の「うつしえ」は「写し絵」か「移し絵」かという問題に答を与えるような記述を先般、夏目漱石の自伝的小説『道草』の中に見出した。漱石自身をモデルにした主人公・健三の子どもの頃について記した第四十章に次の文があったのである。

　「彼の望む玩具は無論彼の自由になった。其中には写し絵の道具も交っていた。」

この「写し絵」について、巻末の「注解」は次のように記している。

　「暗いところで、光線の作用によって、ガラスに描いた絵などを布や紙の幕に映し出すもの。幻灯。」

　漱石の子どもの頃には、「写し絵」の道具がやや高級な子どもの玩具だったのである。漱石の生年は 1967 年、湯川は 1907 年で、どちらも子ども時代は明治時代の中に入る。私は 1935 年生まれで、湯川との生年の隔たりは、漱石と湯川の隔たりより少ない。しかし、東京市内に電灯がほぼ完全普及したのが 1912 年であり（文献 1）、電灯の全国的普及が日本の文化環境を大きく変えたであろうことを考えると、漱石と湯川の子ども時代は、湯川と私の子ども時代より、共通点がはるかに多かったに違いない。（実際、私の子どもの頃には、幻灯に取って代わる 8 ミリフィルムの自家用映写機を使って、近所の家で映画を見せて貰ったことさえある。）以上のことから、『旅人』の英訳における "shadow pictures" は正しかったと認めなければならない。

中の池公園のバラ (Roses in Nakanoike Park)

　わが家に近い「中の池公園」にいろいろな品種のバラの苗木が植えられたのは一昨年だったが、今年はかなり生長して、下に掲載する写真のような花を沢山咲かせている。このようにいろいろなバラが見られるのはどんなに広いバラ園かと思われるかもしれない。ところが実際は、最後の写真に見られるように、公園の遊歩道と公園の境界のコンクリート壁（その上には隣接する民家の敷地がある）との間の細長い土地に植えられているだけである。

Two years ago, seedlings of roses of different varieties were planted in Nakanoike Park near my house. They have now grown considerably and have a lot of flowers as can be seen in the photos below. From those pictures, you may suppose that there is a large rose garden in the park. In fact, the roses grow in a narrow space between the promenade of the park and the concrete wall of the park boundary as shown in the bottom photo.

大阪・天王寺で (At Ten'noji, Osaka)

　昨 5 月 4 日、長女一家と私たち夫婦は JR 天王寺駅に直結しているミオプラザ館 4 階の中華料理店「百楽」で昼食会を持った。写真は同店の個室（幸いにも、ビルの南東の角に位置していた）の窓から撮った風景である。1 枚目は、天王寺公園と通天閣方面。2 枚目は、2013 年 4 月 24 日に全面利用可能になったばかりの阿倍野歩道橋で、「あべの」のローマ字表記の頭文字 "a" をイメージしたデザインになっているという（残念ながら、この店からその全貌は見えなかった）。3 枚目は、2012 年 8 月 30 日に高さが 300 m に達し、ビルとして日本一の高さになった「あべのハルカス」（かろうじて最上部まで写っている）。

On May 4, my daughter's family, my wife and I had lunch at the Chinese restaurant "Hyakuraku" on the fourth floor of Mio Plaza, which was directly connected to JR Ten'noji Station. Photos above show landscapes seen from the windows of our meeting room at the restaurant (fortunately, the room was located in the southeast corner of the building, to make it possible to get those shots). The top photo shows the view in the direction of Ten'noji Park and Tsūtenkaku; the middle one, the Abeno footbridge, which became fully available on April 24, 2013, and was designed in the shape of the initial "a" of "Abeno" (however, we were unable to see the whole shape of the bridge from the restaurant); and the bottom one, the building "Abeno Harukas," whose height reached 300 m on August 30, 2013, to make it the highest building in Japan.

ベニカナメモチの花 (Blossoms of Red Robin)

　さる 4 月 29 日、ウォーキングの途中にある遊園地で、ベニカナメモチの花を見つけて撮影し、家へ帰ってくると、何と、わが家の生け垣のベニカナメモチも二ヵ所だけだが、花をつけていて、こちらの方がよく開いていた。ここに採用した写真はわが家の生け垣のもの。わが家では、いままで一度も花を見たことがなかったので、雌雄の別のある木かと思っていた。

At a playground on my way of walking exercise, I took a picture of blossoms of red robin on April 29. Coming back to my house, I found the same blossoms on the hedge of my home as well, though only at two locations of the hedge. The blossoms of my home were at their best. So, I used the photo of them here. I have never seen blossoms at my hedge before and have been thinking that this plant might be dioecious.

ヒラドツツジとドイツアヤメ (Snow Azalea and German Iris)

　1〜4 枚目の写真は、いずれも 4 月 16 日にウォーキング途中で撮影したヒラドツツジとドイツアヤメ（別名ジャーマンアイリス）。これらは従来、5 月に咲くものと思っていたが、近年は 4 月半ばに開花している。5 枚目は、わが家の庭のジャーマンアイリスで、きょう 5 月 1 日に撮影した。わが家では昨年まで、もっぱらベニカナメモチの生け垣の下で咲いていたが、写真を撮ると花と背景のコントラストが悪くて困った。数年前に庭の奥へ移植しておいた一株が、今年初めて花をつけた。

The first three photos above show blossoms of snow azalea; and the fourth, a flower of German iris; all taken on my way of walking exercise on April 16, 2013. These have been thought to bloom in May, but come to flower in the middle of April these years. The bottom photo shows a flower of German iris in our yard and was taken today (May 1). Until last year, we saw flowers of this plant exclusively under the hedge of red robin in our yard, and I was troubled by bad contrast of flowers and background in taking pictures. A root that had been transplanted into the back of the yard a few years ago had flowers for the first time this year.
