読書週間 (Book Weeks)

　さる 9 月下旬、私の海外のある友人のフェイスブック・ページに、「いま、国際読書週間です。最も手近にある本を取って、54 ページを開き、5 番めの文をあなたのフェイスブックの現況欄に書きましょう。題名は書かないで、この決まりと文を書きましょう。よい読書を！」というような文（原文はイタリア語）を見つけた。

　上記の「決まり」に添えて、その友人が手近の本から抜き書きした文は、天文学関係の一般向けの本からのもののようだった。私がその日に読んでいた英書も、たまたま似たような本だったので、彼女の現況欄へのコメントにその本の 54 ページ、5 番めの文を記した。そして、私の現況欄にもそれを、上記の規則などの英文とともに記した。「幸福の手紙」のような仕組みだと思ったが、悪影響はないので、のった次第である。

　あとで、「国際読書週間」についてインターネットで調べると、まさに、インターネット上のミーム（摸倣子、摸伝子、意伝子などと訳されている。人から人へコピーされる情報）だという説明があった（Ref. 1）。ミームであることを断ってブログに掲載している人もある（Ref. 2）。よく流布されている決まりは、54 ページの 5 番めの文でなく、52 ページの 5 行めということのようだ。

　そのとき、ついでに日本の読書週間についても調べたところ、『ウィキペディア』に「10 月 27 日から 11 月 9 日までの 2 週間にわたり、読書を推進する行事が集中して行われる期間」とあった。きょうが、その中心の日である。あなたの最も手近にある本の 52 ページの 5 行めにはなんと書いてありますか？

　私が最近併読している二つの和書（二つの英書も併読しているが、それらについては、このエッセイの英語版に記す）から 52 ページの 5 行めを引用するならば、次の通りである（これらの本の題名または著者名は下の写真でご覧になれる）。

それから十余年、ニュートンはあの「驚異の二年」に毎日考えていたことを次々に形にし、

　ところで、「読書週間」の文字は、私に漫画「サザエさん」を思い出させる。その理由については、以前、英文ブログ（Ref. 3）に記したので、そちらをご覧いただきたい。

ギンモクセイ (Sweet Osmanthus)

　上の写真（10 月 31 日撮影）の植物は、先日掲載のヒイラギモクセイに似ているが、葉のギザギザがまばらで、また、あまり目立たない。中にはギザギザのない葉もある。そこで、これはギンモクセイだろうと思う。撮影場所は、わが家から南東へ、直線距離で約 1.5 km、堺市が高石市へ少し入り込んでいるところを、ほぼ東西に通っている道路である。車道と歩道の間に、ギンモクセイとサルスベリが交互に植えられて、並木道になっている。下（このパラグラフの英訳の下）の 1 枚目の写真は、その道路の南側の歩道で、右手に並木があり、その右へ写真から出はずれたところに車道がある。そのさらに右にある北側の歩道を撮ったのが、下の 2 枚目の写真である。（英文の下に、まだ和文が続く）

The plant in the picture above (taken on October 31) is similar to the fortune's sweet olive posted the other day. However, the serration of leaves is sparse and not noticeable. There are also some leaves without serration. So, I think this is probably sweet osmanthus (Osmanthus fragrans Lour). I took this photo on the road that runs roughly in the direction from east to west, at the straight distance of about 1.5 km from my house. Part of Sakai City protrudes there into Takaishi City. Between the sidewalk and the driveway, trees of sweet osmanthus and crape myrtle stands alternately to make the road a boulevard. The first photo below shows a sidewalk on the south side of the road. The driveway runs out of the picture off to the right. The second photo below shows the sidewalk on the north side.

　次の 1 枚目の写真は、一本のギンモクセイの木の上部にクモが巣を張っていて、ひっかかったエサを取りに行こうとしているところである。2 枚目は、エサが大き過ぎたので取り落としてしまい、がっかりしているかのようなクモ。

The following photos show a spider that had a web on one of sweet osmanthus trees. In the first photo, the spider is trying to eat the insect that was caught by the web. However, the insect drops because it is too large. Thus, the spider in the second photo looks to be disappointed.

　【概要 (Abstract in Japanese)】このシリーズでは、16歳の少年アーロン（仮名）からの、相対性理論など物理学に関する質問と、筆者テッド（仮名）の回答を紹介している。今回の質問は、物体が光速に近い速さで動いているとき質量がふえるということだが、重さも増すの？ というもの。なお、アーロンが私の答えへの礼状に「"Dr. Who" という SF をご存知ですか」と書いてきたので、私の知らなかったことを一つ、彼から教えて貰う結果となった。

ヒイラギモクセイ (Fortune's Sweet Olive)

　この写真は昨日、堺市・鈴の宮団地の北端に並ぶ何軒もの一戸建て住宅の裏に同じ種類の木で続く生け垣のところで撮った。昨年その場所で撮った写真は、ギンモクセイの名で掲載したが、先日、フェイスブックの友人が掲載した写真で、ヒイラギモクセイという似た種類のあることを知った。

　『ウィキペディア』のモクセイのページ中のギンモクセイの説明には「縁にはあらい細鋸歯があるが、鋸歯がなく全縁［引用者注：葉の縁が滑らかで、ぎざぎざのないこと］の場合もある」とある。他方、ヒイラギモクセイのページには「縁には刺状の鋸歯が 8〜10 対ある」とある。したがって、葉に鋸歯があることを見ただけでは、どちらであるかがはっきりしない。しかし、後者の説明に「生垣などによく利用されている」とあるので、ヒイラギモクセイに軍配を上げることにした。

　ところで、ことし上記の団地の生け垣では、花が少ししか見られない。生け垣の剪定をかなり遅く、夏の終わり頃にした様子であり、それが影響したのではないだろうか。

I took the above photo yesterday at one of similar hedges that are lined at the back of several single-family homes, which in turn stand along the northern side of Suzunomiya housing complex, Sakai. Last year, I also took a photo at the same place and posted it by the name of Osmanthus fragrans Lour. Recently, I learned about a similar species, fortune's sweet olive (Osmanthus x fortunei), from a photo posted by a friend of mine at the Facebook.

The description about Osmanthus fragrans Lour on the Wikipedia page (Japanese edition) of Osmanthus fragrans includes a sentence like this: Edges of leaves either have sharp serration with wide spaces or have no serration. On the other hand, the Wikipedia page (Japanese edition) of fortune's sweet olive sates that edges of leaves have from eight to ten pairs of spiny serration. So, we cannot identify the plant in the photo as one of these by the appearance of leaves. However, the description in the latter page that this plant is often used as a hedge makes me prefer to use the title "Fortune's sweet olive" here.

By the way, the number of blossoms I saw at the hedges described at the beginning of this post was considerably small this year. The reason for this seems to be the fact that pruning of the trees of the hedges were probably made relatively late, i.e., near the end of summer.

空二態 (Two Appearances of the Sky)

　1 枚目の写真は、一昨日、ウォーキングの途中で薄明光線、いわゆる天使のはしご、を撮ったもの。カメラを空に向けたとき、液晶モニター画面が暗くなって、どのあたりが中心になっているかよく分からないままシャッターを切った。撮れた元の写真では、右上の明るい部分がほぼ中心にあったので大幅にトリミングした。

　2 枚目の写真は、昨日の午後 5 時過ぎ、南の空の夕焼け雲を撮ったもの。きょう好天気になる前兆かと思っていたところ（実際そうなったのだが）、午後 7 時過ぎ頃、激しい雷雨がしばらく続いたのには驚いた。

The upper photo shows crepuscular rays (also known as the angel's ladder) I saw during walking practice the day before yesterday. When I had the camera toward the sky, the LCD monitor screen was dark. So, I released the shutter without knowing the exact camera view. In the original photo taken, the bright part at the upper right was almost at the center. Thus, I trimmed it to a large extent.

The lower picture shows sunset clouds seen in the southern sky a little after five o'clock yesterday afternoon. I had thought that those clouds suggested today's sunny weather (actually it was so) but was surprised at a strong thunderstorm that continued for a while some time after seven o'clock yesterday evening.
