4 月 3 日の同窓会のあと、宿泊している学士会館へいったん戻ってから、大連嶺前小学校の同期生 O 君の来訪を待つ間、北の丸公園付近、東京国立近代美術館前あたりを散策した（上掲の写真参照）。
O 君は約束の時間よりも遅れて、ちょうど学士会館のレストランが開く 5 時半頃に現れた。中華料理の「紅楼夢」で 8 時半頃まで、ビールと料理を楽しみながら歓談した。彼の力作『天界航路：天野芳太郎とその時代』（筑摩書房、1984；632 ページ）を貰った。
彼には、他にも『恐るべき空白：死のオーストラリア縦断』（早川書房、1969）と『駐米大使野村吉三郎の無念：日米開戦を回避できなかった男たち』 （日本経済新聞、1994）の著書があることを、帰宅後にアマゾンのウェブサイトで知った。彼はいままで、これらについて吹聴することもなかった上に、帰宅後に私が会話中の誤りをメールでわびたのに対し、自分も誤っていたと返事して来た。いかにも謙虚な人である。（つづく）
After the reunion last Wednesday, I once returned to Gakushikaikan. Then, I went for a walk near the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, in Kitanomaru Park (see photos above) to spend the time before meeting the classmate of Dalian Reizen Elementary School, Mr. O.
Mr. O showed up around 5:30. It was later than the appointed time but just the time for restaurants in Gakushikaikan to open. We enjoyed talking over beer and Chinese dishes at "Kōrōmu" until 8:30. He gave me his voluminous work, Tenkai-kōro: Amano Yoshitaro to Sono Jidai (The Route in Heaven: Yoshitaro Amano and His Age) (Chikuma Shobō, 1984; 632 pages), as a gift.
After returning home, I learned from Amazon Web site that Mr. O had also published two other books, Osorubeki Kūhaku (Terrible Blank) (Hayakawa, 1969) and Chūbeitaishi Nomura Kichisaburō no Munen (Chagrin of the United States Ambassador, Kichisaburō Nomura) (Nihon Keizai Shimbun, 1994). He has never told me about these books. Further, he wrote me that he was also wrong, in response to my email message in which I apologized my misunderstanding in conversation with him. These facts indicate that he is quite a man of modesty. (To be continued)
