わが家のアセビは、咢が薄黄緑色（1 枚目の写真）で、遠目にはその色が目立たなくて、花の咲いている様子は、白っぽく清楚な感じである。他方、鳳公園のアセビの咢は赤色（2 枚目の写真）で、派手である。遠目には、茶色っぽく見えて、毒々しくもある。実際、アセビはグラヤノトキシン I という有毒成分を含んでいるという。ところが、今年、わが家のアセビの木にも一つの枝に咢が部分的に赤みを帯びた花がついた（3 枚目の写真）。 赤もこれくらいならば可愛い、とは「親の欲目」か。
Blossoms of the Japanese andromeda tree in my yard have calyxes of light yellow-green color (the top photo), which is not noticeable from a distance. So, these blossoms give us a neat and fresh feeling. On the other hand, blossoms of the Japanese andromeda trees in Ōtori Park have red calyxes (the middle photo) and, at the distance, are seen to be brownish and even poisonous. In fact, this plant contains a toxic ingredient called grayanotoxin I. This year, a branch of the tree in my yard had blossoms with calyxes partially reddish (the bottom photo). I think that calyxes with such a small amount of red color are quite cute, though this might be what is said in the proverb, "All his geese are swans."
