２冊の本とCD・DVDセット (Two Books and a Set of CDs with DVDs)

　インターネットで注文した小さな本2冊と、CD5枚・DVD1枚のセット1組が一昨日届いた。本の一冊は山口仲美著『日本語の古典』（岩波新書）。言葉との関わり合いという観点から、奈良時代から江戸時代までの代表的な古典文学を取り上げて解説しているところが、私の趣味に大いに合いそうだと思って買った。「プロローグ」に「古典を読むと、物事を相対的に捉える目が養われます。［…］古典は私たちの生きている現代とはかなり違った価値観や習慣を示してくれます」という言葉があったのも気に入った。ツイッターで和文と私の英訳との両方で紹介したところ、英訳の方は南米コロンビアの理論物理学者に気に入って貰えたようで、彼は再ツイートをしていた。

　もう一冊の本は『NHKテレビテキスト こだわり人物伝 2011年2-3月』。3月放送分で益川敏英氏が湯川秀樹について語る内容が記されており、湯川会会員の一人が会のグループメールで知らせてくれたものである。益川調の語りで、他の人が言い難いようなことを言ってのけている。最後に「ああ、今回も言いたいことを言った。えりゃあこと言ってしまった。きっとまた、叩かれるんだろう。ほんとに口は災いのもとだ。反省」と述べている。最も辛辣な湯川批判は、湯川の非核の活動が、周囲の情熱的な弟子たちの担ぎ上げに上手に乗っかった「樽神輿」であるとの見方である。しかし、私は確かにそういう面もあったと思い、それほど驚かなかった。

　CD・DVDのセットは『鮫島有美子がうたう 日本のうた・世界のうた 100』。私の愛唱歌のレパートリーを広げようと思って求めた。

I had ordered two small books and a set of four CDs with two DVDs on the Internet, and a package of them arrived the day before yesterday. One of the books is entitled Nihongo no Koten (Classic Literature Written in Japanese) (Iwanami, 2011) and written by Nakami Yamaguchi. This book explains representative works of classic literature in periods of Nara to Edo from the viewpoint of the relationship to Japanese language. I thought that such treatment of the subject fitted to my taste, and this is the reason for my buying this book. I also liked the following words in "Prologue" of the book: "Reading classic literature makes our eyes catch things in an objective way. [...] It shows us values and habits significantly different from contemporary ones." I tweeted these words both in original Japanese and in my English translation. A theoretical physicist in Colombia liked the English version and re-tweeted it.

Another book is The Text of NHK TV Program 'Kodawari Jimbutsuden, February and March, 2011" ("Kodawari Jimbutsuden" means something like "Biography from a Unique Viewpoint"). The TV program is scheduled to broadcast Toshihide Maskawa's talk about Hideki Yukawa in March. So, a member of our Yukawa group informed us of this book by a group e-mail message. With the narrative tone peculiar to him, Maskawa says such things as no other people dare to say, and his last words are: "Oh, this time I also talked as I liked and said extremely rude things. I'm sure I'll be reproached. Better the foot slip than the tongue, really. I must reflect." Maskawa's severest criticism of Yukawa is about the latter's anti-nuke activities: "Those were smart ride on a 'barrel shrine' carried by his passionate disciples." Feeling that this view refers to part of truth, however, I was not surprised so much to read it.

The set of CDs and DVDs is entitled Yumiko Sameshima sings 100 songs of Japan and the World. I bought this to broaden the repertoire of my favorite songs to sing.
