In the evening of August 24, I went to Westy Hall near here to listen to the concert of the flute ensemble Lynx with my wife. Lynx consists of four flute players. It was formed in 1997 while they were students of the Tokyo University of the Arts, has continued activities at home and abroad, and released the best album "re" from Sony Music Direct for the first time in 2009. It is noteworthy that each member is a mother of a small child. The program was as follows:
J.S. Bach, Toccata and Fugue
J.S. Bach, Arioso
J.S. Bach, Air on the G String
J.S. Bach, From "Orchestral Suite No. 2"
J.S. Bach, Excerpts from "The Art of Fugue"
Lynx, Oriental Navigation
The members alternately talked about pieces they performed and about themselves, making us pleasant. So, two hours went by rather quickly. In response to the request of encore, they played "Little Prayer" and "Furusato (Native Place)." The former was an original piece composed by Lynx for the victims of 3.11 Earthquake. The concert was quite enjoyable with its affordable price of admission (2000 yen), but it was regrettable that there were many empty seats in the hall.
The performers also talked about such techniques in Bach's composition as the combined use of subject melody and the same in the reverse order of notes. This made me want to read in the nearest future Douglas Hofstadter's Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid (first published in 1979), which I had bought many years ago and had not yet read.
