さる 1 月 15 日、高畑勲監督・スタジオジブリ制作のアニメーション映画『かぐや姫の物語』を見た。背景に次つぎに現れる日本の四季の風景の描き方がすてきである。「かぐや姫」がいまの日本に住んだとすれば、はたして、月世界へ帰ることを残念に思うかどうかを考えさせられた。
その日の晩、たまたま、日本テレビ系列の番組「笑ってコラえて！」がスタジオジブリ取材特集をしていた。高畑監督が 8 年の歳月をかけて完成した『かぐや姫の物語』をたずさえて、彼が大きな影響を受けたカナダのアニメーション作家、フレデリック・バック（Frédéric Back、1924–2013、『クラック！』と『木を植えた男』でアカデミー賞短編アニメ賞を2度受賞）に見せに行った場面の録画が紹介された。
高畑監督は、バックの体調に考慮して 6 分の予告編を見て貰ったのだが、彼は「きれいだ。すばらしい。デッサンの軽やかさ、そして空白、描かれていない空間のすばらしさ」などと絶賛した。そして、「できればもう少し見たい」といったので、結局、本編 137 分を鑑賞して貰い、「この作品は私の長年の夢がかなえられたようなものでもある」との感想も得たのである。その 8 日後の 2013 年 12 月 24 日にバックは死去した。高畑監督は、ぎりぎりのところで恩返しが出来たのである。
On January 15, I went to see a Japanese animated film produced by Studio Ghibli and directed by Isao Takahata, The Tale of Princess Kaguya. Drawings of landscapes in four seasons of Japan that appear one after another in the background were splendid. I wondered whether Princess Kaguya regretted to go back to the moon if she lived in Japan today.
In the evening of that day, it happened that an NTV program had a feature coverage of Studio Ghibli. The program showed the scene of Takahata visiting the animator Frédéric Back [1924-2013; he won the Academy Award for Animated Short Film for twice for his film Crac! and L'homme qui plantait des arbres (The Man Who Planted Trees)] in Canada with the film just completed after eight years of The Tale of Princess Kaguya. Back was a person from whom Takahata got a great influence on his animation making.
Takahata showed Back a trailer of 6 minutes in consideration of his physical condition. Back praised the film by saying, "It's beautiful. Blank spaces are wonderful. Light touches of drawings and spaces with nothing drawn are great." Then, he said, "I want to see a little more if possible." After all, Takahata made him watch all the 137-minute film to Back. The latter said to the former, "This work is like the one in which my dream of long years was realized." Back died eight days after that, on December 24, 2013. Takahata was just in time in returning the favor to him.
