木の上の実たち (Fruits on Their Trees)

　写真上：ソメイヨシノ（バラ科）の実。2011年6月2日、堺市・鈴の宮公園で撮影。サクランボと呼ばれて食用になるサクラの実をつけるのは、主にセイヨウミザクラだそうである。ソメイヨシノの実は、サクランボほどには大きくならない。それにしても、ソメイヨシノが実をつけているのに気づいたのは、この歳になって初めてのことである。

　写真下：ビワ（枇杷、バラ科）の実。2011年6月15日、ウォーキング途中で撮影。こちらは逆に、木に実が生ると、そこにビワがあったと気づくが、花の咲いているのに気づいたことがない。

The upper photo, taken June 2, 2011, in Suzunomiya Park, Sakai, shows fruits of Yoshino cherry (Prunus × yedoensis). The cherry tree that bears fruits to be eaten is called wild cherry or sweet cherry (Prunus avium). Fruits of Yoshino cherry do not become so large as those of wild cherry. Even so, I noticed the fruits on a Yoshino cherry tree for the first time at this fairly old age.

The lower photo, taken June 15, 2011, on my way of walking exercise, shows fruits of Japanese loquat (Eriobotrya japonica). Contrary to the Yoshino cherry tree, I always notice the loquat tree when it bears fruits but have never seen its blossoms.
