14 (Cruise on Canals in the Netherlands and Belgium -14-)

Around 1:00 am on April 19, our ship arrived at the port of Vlissingen, a city of southwest Netherlands, and anchored there. The sketch above shows the scenery of the port in the morning. Starting the Vlissingen port by bus at 8:30, we soon entered in Belgium, arriving the destination, Bruges, in about one hour. Bruges is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium, includes three World Heritage Sites and is sometimes referred as "The Venice of the North." Listening to the explanation in fluent Japanese given by a local guide, who was a Belgian women and once had lived in Japan, and passing through Minnewater Park, we started walking in the old city of Bruges [a World Heritage Site of the name "Historic District Bruges (Brugge)"].

On that day, it was scheduled that U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who was visiting Belgium, passed through this area, but there seemed no strict policing.
